Comedian John Mulaney postpones Minneapolis show after shooting

Actor and comedian John Mulaney said tonight he is postponing shows planned for this weekend in Minneapolis following yesterday's fatal shooting of a woman by an ICE agent.

Mulaney had been scheduled to perform at the Armory.

“What’s happening in your city is heartbreaking,” Mulaney wrote in a statement posted to social media.

He said he postponed the shows regretfully, because “it feels unfair to the audience” when the city is going through a challenging time.

“Still, I don’t feel comfortable asking thousands of people each night to leave their homes, gather at the venue, and then make their way home when the situation is so unsafe,” Mulaney wrote.

The tickets will be honored at the same venue in April, he wrote.

‘They are attacking our neighbors,’ Minneapolis protester says

Hundreds of protesters marched in Minneapolis tonight toward the location where a woman was fatally shot by ICE, as freezing rain poured down.

The crowd chanted, “Say Her Name! Renee Nicole Good!” and “Money for jobs and education, not for cops and deportation.”

Protester Caroline, 46, who asked that her last name not be used to protect her family’s safety, said: “It’s obviously not safe here. They are attacking our neighbors.”

Caroline said she felt tonight’s protest showed the spirit of Minnesota,

“This is our community. This is America. This is Minnesota,” she said.

Protester Muna Hassan, 28, echoed the sentiment.

“We’re just one people. We are here to protect each other as a community,” she said.

Minneapolis eyewitness says officers were not in front of car

A woman who said she was on the street in Minneapolis facing the front windshield of the car when Good was shot told NBC News that no immigration officers were in front of the car when the shots were fired.

Betsy, who did not want her last name used to protect her family, said she was on the east side of Portland Avenue when she saw the shooting.

"I want to be incredibly clear about this. The officers were not in front of her car the moment this all occurred," said Betsy, who shared videos of the aftermath of the scene. "She was attempting to move her car away from the cluster of cars and the agents south on Portland Avenue, and the agents who fired the shot were standing next to the vehicle, not at all in front of it."

Betsy said after the shots, Good's car headed in her direction, but because everything happened so quickly, it didn't occur to her to move. The car crashed about 4 feet in front of her, she said. After the car slammed into parked cars, a woman from the other side of the street ran to the driver's side of the car and threw open the door to check on the driver and told her to call 911, she said.

Betsy said she called, but did not get through. Federal agents then began moving to the vehicle and were holding out their firearms and yelling at people to get back, she said.

"At that moment, I got really scared, and I kind of ran to a yard of a house I was standing in front of to get behind a fence," she said. "I was really afraid."

Terrified, but together, neighbors honor slain driver at memorial

Dozens of people braved freezing rain tonight at the somber site of a makeshift memorial for Renee Nicole Good, 37, who was fatally shot by an ICE officer in Minneapolis yesterday.

The memorial, which witnesses said was where Good’s car crashed after she was shot, was lined with flower bouquets and lit by dozens of candles. The scene also featured signs reading “Peace,” “Remember” and “ICE Is Mafia.”

“If it can happen to this person, it can happen to anybody,” Tim Ross, 31, said at the site. “It’s important to occupy a space like this, but it’s also very hard to be this close to an event that’s traumatic, not just to the person that experienced it, but to the entire community.”

Amalia Perrier, 23, said the neighborhood is shaken. “There are no words for how shocked the community is. It’s just terrifying.”

Perrier said she wanted to show up for the immigrant community amid the increase in enforcement operations.

“I think all of us are really fatigued and exhausted watching our neighbors being kidnapped and taken out of their communities,” she said. “I think the least we can do is just show our support and show up.”

Portland mayor says federal government version of events can no longer be trusted

Portland Mayor Keith Wilson said after two people were shot in a federal agent-involved incident in his city that the Trump administration’s account of events can no longer be trusted.

“We know what the federal government says happened here,” Wilson, a Democrat, said at a news conference.

“There was a time that we could take them at their word. That time has long passed.”

DHS said today that Border Patrol agents were conducting a “targeted vehicle stop” for the passenger in the vehicle, a Venezuelan in the U.S. without authorization who is allegedly affiliated with a transnational gang. DHS said that the “driver weaponized his vehicle” and tried to run them over and that an agent fired.

The shooting in Portland comes a day after an ICE agent fatally shot Good in Minneapolis. Wilson said he spoke with Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey earlier today.

“We shared not just our concerns, but our grief for the families that are suffering and grief for the recklessness of our federal government,” Wilson said.

ICE protests staged in Boston, Indianapolis, elsewhere

A crowd of demonstrators in Boston held signs that read “ICE out of our communities” and a speaker called for an end to “ICE terror” in one of several protests around the country tonight following the fatal shooting of a woman in her vehicle in Minneapolis.

Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey, a Democrat, is one of the politicians who has denounced the fatal shooting of 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good by an ICE officer in Minneapolis yesterday.

“No matter how the Trump Administration spins this, we all saw it,” Healey wrote on X. The shooting was captured on video recorded by a bystander.

Several hundred people attended the protest in Boston, NBC Boston reported.

Mackenzie Rawcliffe, of Cambridge, told the station that the shooting was “so drastically horrible” and that she believes the Trump administration acted to “immediately try to lie about it.”

“This is wrong, and I can’t not say something,” Rawcliffe said. “That would be un-American.”

In Indianapolis, demonstrators stretched a banner that read “Abolish I.C.E.!” and members of the crowd said they were demanding justice for Good.

In Cleveland, a crowd chanted “No ICE, no Trump, no fascist USA!” and “Justice for Renee!” as passing cars honked.

Portland official says he expects peaceful protest in response to shooting

Portland City Council member Jamie Dunphy urged people to take information from the federal government about today's shooting with a “heavy grain of salt” and said he expects many in the city of more than half a million to protest.

“I expect Portlanders will take to the streets and show with their voices peacefully, and in many cases ridiculously, that this is not the kind of community we are living in and this is not an acceptable way for the federal government to be treating our citizens,” he told Gadi Schwartz tonight on "Stay Tuned Now."

“We are not afraid to get out of our homes and create some sort of catchy slogan on a sign and show up wearing a frog costume,” he said.

Portland police say FBI handling shooting investigation

Portland Police Chief Bob Day said the FBI is handling the investigation into the shooting of two people by federal agents.

“This is a federal investigation. It’s being led by the FBI,” Day said at a news conference this evening.

“This is their responsibility,” but, he said, local police provide some assistance, including securing scenes, when incidents like today’s occur.

Day said that Portland police are not involved in immigration and that police did not know whether the shooting incident was related to immigration.

FBI Portland changes messaging from investigating shooting to assault on agents

The FBI in Portland initially said on X that it was investigating an “agent involved shooting” that injured two people and involved federal agents — but then deleted the post and focused on an alleged assault on agents.

FBI Portland initially said on X that “FBI Portland is investigating an agent involved shooting that happened at approximately 2:15pm near the 10000 block of Main St. in Portland involving Customs and Border Patrol Agents in which 2 individuals were wounded.”

Asked about the deleted post, the FBI in Portland sent a revised statement on the incident. The new statement focused on "an assault on federal officers."

“FBI Portland is investigating an assault on a federal officers that happened at approximately 2:15pm near the 10000 block of Main St. in Portland involving two Customs and Border Patrol agents,” it said.

“The two assailants fled the scene immediately following the shooting and are currently being treated for their injuries,” it said.

The Department of Homeland Security said that Border Patrol agents were conducting a “targeted stop” on a vehicle in which the passenger was a Venezuelan in the country illegally and who allegedly was involved in a recent shooting in Portland.

DHS said that the driver “weaponized his vehicle and attempted to run over the law enforcement agents” and that an agent “fired a defensive shot” and the driver drove off.

Portland police said in a statement that they later found two people, whom it identified only as a male and female, who had been shot.

Portland shooting happened during targeted operation, sources say

The shooting involving federal agents that wounded two people in Portland tonight was part of a targeted operation, two law enforcement sources familiar with the situation told NBC News.

One source specified that the agents were part of the special operation detachment in “Operation Oregon.”

Agents stopped a red Toyota and the driver tried to flee, striking an unidentified agent, the sources said. An agent then fired at the vehicle, the sources said.

The people in the vehicle, a 33-year-old man and a 32-year-old woman, were treated for injuries at a local hospital.

The sources described them as suspected Venezuelan gang members or associates.

Portland has been targeted by Trump administration

The mayor of Portland and a U.S. senator from Oregon objected to the presence of federal agents in the city after two people were shot today.

“Trump’s deployment of federal agents in my hometown is clearly inflaming violence — and must end,” Sen. Ron Wyden, a Democrat, said on X this afternoon.

Trump has long criticized Portland and blasted it with claims about crime and protests.

His administration sent members of the National Guard to the city, despite objections from local officials, prompting a legal fight.

Deputy Assistant Attorney General Eric Hamilton had argued that troops are necessary to defend against “cruel radicals who have laid siege” to Portland’s ICE facility.

Following the Supreme Court's decision to decline the Trump administration’s request to allow the National Guard to be deployed to Chicago, Trump said last week he was ordering the National Guard to leave Portland.

Mayor Keith Wilson today criticized what he called “federal militarization” and said it undermines public safety.

“Portland is not a ‘training ground’ for militarized agents, and the ‘full force’ threatened by the administration has deadly consequences,” Wilson said in a statement.

Agent feared for 'life and safety' when he fired in Portland, DHS says

A Department of Homeland Security official said a federal agent feared for "his life and safety" when he fired today in the shooting that wounded two people in Portland.

DHS spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin said Border Patrol agents were conducting a targeted vehicle stop involving a Venezuelan illegal immigrant who she said was affiliated with the transnational Tren de Aragua prostitution ring and was accused in a recent shooting in Portland. The driver was believed to be a member of the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua, she said.

"When agents identified themselves to the vehicle occupants, the driver weaponized his vehicle and attempted to run over the law enforcement agents," McLaughlin said in a statement.

"Fearing for his life and safety, an agent fired a defensive shot," she said. "The driver drove off with the passenger, fleeing the scene. This situation is evolving and more information is forthcoming."

Two shot by federal agents in Portland, city says

Federal agents shot two people were shot this afternoon in Portland, Oregon, the city government said.

Portland police responded to a report of a shooting on Southeast Main Street just before 2:20 p.m.

“Officers confirmed that federal agents had been involved in a shooting,” the city said. “Portland Police were not involved in the incident.”

At 2:24 p.m., police got information that someone was asking for help and officers “found a male and female with apparent gunshot wounds,” the city said.

The conditions of the injured people were not known, the city said. Officers used a tourniquet when responding to the injured, it said. The two injured people were taken to the hospital, the city said.

"Officers have determined the two people were injured in the shooting involving federal agents," the city said.

Police Chief Chief Bob Day called for patience.

"We are still in the early stages of this incident,” Day said in a statement. "We understand the heightened emotion and tension many are feeling in the wake of the shooting in Minneapolis, but I am asking the community to remain calm as we work to learn more."

11 people arrested outside Minneapolis ICE facility, DHS says

A spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security said 11 people were arrested outside an ICE field office in Minneapolis.

The spokesperson, Tricia McLaughlin, characterized them as “rioters.”

She alleged that “600 rioters swarmed the ICE Field Office and began assaulting and spitting on federal law enforcement and were blocking law enforcement vehicles from entering the facility.”

NBC affiliate KARE of Minneapolis reported that hundreds of people tried this morning to block employees’ access to a building being used to house federal immigration officials and that some people appeared to be detained.

McLaughlin said 11 people were arrested on assault and obstruction charges.

Mayor Jacob Frey and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, both Democrats, have questioned DHS’ account of the fatal shooting of Good yesterday, which sparked the outrage and protests in Minneapolis.

McLaughlin also said the woman was a “violent rioter.” The shooting and incident were captured on video taken by bystanders.

Officer who shot driver was dragged by a vehicle in June

The ICE officer who fatally shot a Minnesota woman yesterday was previously dragged by a car during an immigration enforcement operation in June, DHS spokeswoman Tricia McLaughlin said.

In June, ICE officers in Minneapolis attempted to arrest Roberto Carlos Muñoz-Guatemala during a traffic stop. He was in the country illegally, DHS said in a news release, and was previously “arrested for domestic assault and convicted of sex crimes against an underage teenager.”

When the man refused to comply, the officer broke his car window and reached inside, getting his arm stuck, according to court documents. When the man attempted to drive away, he dragged the officer, which was captured on video.

The officer suffered multiple lacerations and needed 33 stitches to close his wounds, according to court documents from the June incident, which identified the agent as Jonathan Ross. NBC News reached out to DHS requesting comment from Ross.

Atmosphere remains tense as officials urge calm

From New York to Los Angeles, people are taking to the streets to express their outrage at federal immigration efforts after an officer fatally shot a woman in Minneapolis yesterday.

Protests erupted almost immediately in Minneapolis yesterday and continued into today outside a federal building near the Twin Cities airport. Since then, more demonstrations have either taken place or been planned in New York, Philadelphia, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Diego and the San Francisco Bay Area.

Walz called it patriotic duty to protest but also cautioned people to make sure demonstrations remained peaceful. He warned that it could push the federal government to send more of its troops to the area if protesters "take the bait."

"Do not allow them to invoke the Insurrection Act," Walz said. "Do not allow them to declare martial law. Do not allow them to lie about the security and the decency of this state."

Attorney General Pam Bondi said on X that anyone obstructing federal law enforcement or damaging federal property would be arrested and prosecuted.

"Do not test our resolve," she warned.

Walz prepares National Guard for possible deployment

Walz authorized the Minnesota National Guard "to be staged and ready to support local and state law enforcement" in the wake of ongoing protests over the ICE shooting.

The authorization is purely a precaution, said Walz, who praised the state for staging peaceful protests in the wake of the fatal shooting of Good, 37, by an ICE officer yesterday.

“Minnesotans have met this moment," he said in a statement. "Thousands of people have peacefully made their voices heard. Minnesota: thank you. We saw powerful peace."

Minnesota community leaders critical of ICE and federal government

Activists and community organizers in Minnesota came together today to openly criticize Homeland Security's characterization of Good's death yesterday, some calling for the officer's arrest.

Nekima Levy Armstrong, a civil rights attorney, referred to the Justice Department's own policy instructing officers not to shoot into moving vehicles except in the most extreme circumstances. Video and eyewitness accounts showing Good's vehicle turning away did not appear to meet that standard, Armstrong said.

"I’m going to say this plainly, because the truth matters," Armstrong said. "The federal government is lying about this killing."

Unidos Minnesota Literacy Coordinator Rebecca Welty urged Minnesota officials to arrest and charge the officer "as they would anyone who shot and killed another human being." She and other leaders insisted that ICE stop its activities in Minnesota.

Jaylani Hussein, executive director of the state's Council on American-Islamic Relations, called on people to use their shared frustration in the wake of Good's death.

"Let's not let Renee Good's life and her murder be in vain," Hussein said. "We are getting a second chance Minneapolis, after the murder of George Floyd, to get it right."

Pritzker and Walz talk after ICE fatal shooting

Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker, a longtime Walz ally, spoke to Walz yesterday in the wake of the fatal shooting in Minneapolis, telling him to keep in mind what he was dealing with: "a Trump administration that lied."

According to a person with knowledge of the conversation, Pritzker reupped a playbook he had shared in the past with Walz and other Democratic governors about what he believed Trump ultimately wanted, which was to stoke violence in their states as a pretext to deploy federalized troops.

While he was dealing with a surge of ICE and Border Patrol activity in Chicago and its suburbs, Pritzker repeatedly asked residents not to “take the bait” and allow protests to descend into violence.

Walz conveyed some of the same sentiments when he addressed the public at a news conference.

“To Minnesotans, don’t take the bait. Do not take the bait. Do not allow them to deploy federal troops into here. Do not allow them to invoke the Insurrection Act," Walz said. "Do not allow them to declare martial law. Do not allow them to lie about the security and the decency of this state. And let’s let this investigation play out.”

At the same time, at his direction, Pritzker’s communications team was in touch with Walz's team to talk through some of the situations Illinois had already faced.

Last year, immigration agents shot a Chicago woman multiple times. At the time of the incident, they declared her a domestic terrorist, and prosecutors indicted her. The charges were later dropped.

Vance doubles down on support for ICE

During a roughly 30-minute session with reporters, Vance reaffirmed his previous statements that Good’s death was “a tragedy of her own making.” He said the ICE officer who shot her was doing an “important job for the United States of America” and had been previously dragged by a suspect’s car during an incident in June.

“So you think maybe he’s a little bit sensitive about somebody ramming him with an automobile?” Vance said.

He also announced that the administration is creating an assistant attorney general position to investigate allegations of fraud — beginning in Minnesota.

Vance criticized Walz at the briefing, calling him a “joke” who has “enabled fraud” in the state.

Vance announces White House is creating a position to investigate alleged fraud, violence in states

Vance announced at the White House briefing that the administration is creating an assistant attorney general position to investigate fraud allegations and violence across various states.

“We know that the fraud isn’t just happening in Minneapolis; it’s also happening in states like Ohio. It’s happening in states like California,” he said.

“What we’re doing in order to help coordinate this remarkable interagency effort from the Trump administration, but also to make sure that we prosecute the bad guys and do it as swiftly and efficiently as possible, is we are creating a new assistant attorney general position who will have nationwide jurisdiction over the issue of fraud,” he said.

He said the position will be run out of the White House, supervised by him and Trump.

Vance said that the administration will nominate someone in the coming days and that he has spoken to Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., who he said has “promised me swift confirmation for this official.”

“This is the person who is going to make sure that we stop defrauding the American people,” Vance said.

Later on in the briefing, he said the assistant attorney general would also investigate violence across the country. Asked what his message is to "leftist agitators who feel emboldened to obstruct ICE activity," Vance said: "I think they shouldn't feel emboldened, because now they have an assistant attorney general who is going to prosecute and investigate their fraud and their violence more aggressively than it has ever been investigated in the United States of America. We are doing so much to try to find the financing networks and the domestic terrorism networks that legitimate this violence, that fund this violence, and then, of course, engage in the violence."

Officer who fired deadly shots was involved in car-dragging incident in 2025

The ICE officer who fatally shot Good was dragged by a suspect's car during an attempted arrest on June 17, DHS spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin told NBC News.

The officer, whom NBC News is not identifying, had stopped Roberto Carlos Munoz-Guatemala, who "was uncooperative and refused to follow directions," the U.S. Attorney's Office for Minnesota said in a statement Dec. 10 announcing the man's conviction for assaulting a federal officer.

The agent "broke the back window so that he could open the vehicle from the inside" before "Munoz-Guatemala then accelerated his car," officials said.

"As he sped away, the agent’s arm became trapped between the seat and the car frame," the statement continued. "Munoz-Guatemala dragged the federal agent for more than 100 yards, while weaving back and forth in an attempt to shake the agent from the car. The agent was eventually jarred free from the car but suffered significant injuries to his arms and hand."

ICE officer had been previously dragged by a car, Vance says

The ICE officer who shot Good had previously been injured by a car on duty, according to Vance.

Vance told reporters at today’s White House briefing that the officer was dragged by a car six months ago. The agent "had 33 stitches in his leg," he said.

"So you think maybe he's a little bit sensitive about somebody ramming him with an automobile?" he said.

Before the briefing, the Department of Homeland Security told NBC News that the officer was involved with an arrest in June in Bloomington, Minnesota, where an agent was dragged about 50 yards. The suspect in the case was alleged to have been trying to flee officers, according to DHS.

In response to a question about Gov. Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, Vance said, “Look, Tim Walz is a joke. His entire administration has been a joke.”

“I don’t care what Tim Walz says, I care about getting to the bottom of this fraud for the American people, and I care about enforcing the nation’s immigration laws,” Vance said.

Vance softens tone on whether woman tried to intentionally ram ICE agents

Vance told reporters that he is "not happy that this woman lost her life" while going back and forth on whether the woman tried to ram officers or not.

The vice president at first offered very firm remarks that the woman attempted to ram agents with her car. He said it was a "lie" that this was "some innocent woman" when she was out protesting ICE action in the area.

But Vance softened his tone when asked if he still believed that the woman was trying to intentionally harm agents after watching video of the incident. Vance said he still believes the woman violated the law but that he doesn't know "what is in a person's heart or in a person's head."

"Look, if people want to say that we should have a legitimate debate about, you know, what was she really doing right? Was she panicking when she drove into this officer, or was she actually trying to ram him? That's a reasonable conversation," Vance said.

Vance addresses victim, says shooting was 'tragedy of her own making'

Asked whether Vice President JD Vance risked pre-empting an investigation by laying out specific claims as a probe was just underway, Vance argued that "what you see is what you get in this case."

"You have a woman who aimed her car at a law enforcement officer and pressed on the accelerator. Nobody debates that," he said, despite those claims being under debate.

"I can believe that her death is a tragedy while also recognizing that it's a tragedy of her own making and a tragedy of the far left who has marshaled an entire movement, a lunatic fringe, against our law enforcement officers," he added.

Many Democrats have slammed the administration's conclusions, arguing that the video does not appear to show the woman trying to hit officers.

White House accuses Democrats of 'sinister movement' to impede immigration arrests

President Donald Trump stands fully behind ICE in the wake of yesterday's fatal shooting, White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt said at the opening her press briefing today.

Leavitt then delivered a fierce condemnation of Democrats and Minnesota state officials, characterizing the deadly shooting as part of a larger "sinister left wing movement" to attack the Trump administration's crackdown on immigration.

"They don't want our border secured or criminal illegal aliens being removed," Leavitt said. "As a result, Democrats are impeding immigration enforcement operations daily, creating extremely heightened and dangerous circumstances that make it nearly impossible for the men and women of law enforcement to simply do their job."

Federal takeover of probe could short-circuit state prosecution

The federal freeze-out of state investigators could prevent Minnesota prosecutors from pushing any case against the ICE agent who gunned down a female motorist, the state's top cop said.

"To be able to file state charges, we would need again, a full investigation, which would include the opportunity to have been at the crime scene, to have had the opportunity to take a look at all the video and evidence that the FBI would have in their possession," Commissioner of Public Safety Bob Jacobson said.

State officials said Thursday that the FBI would be solely in charge of Wednesday's deadly encounter, in a reversal from earlier beliefs that the probe would be a dual federal-state effort.

"Unless we do that thorough investigation, unless we have access to all of that evidence ... without any of that, we would not be able to put together a quality investigation for any prosecutor to be able to make a determination as to whether or not someone should be charged with a crime," Jacobson added.

City of Minneapolis speaks out on removal of state investigators from FBI investigation

In a post on X, the City of Minneapolis commented on the decision of federal authorities to cut out the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) from the probe into the killing of Renee Nicole Good.

"We are concerned that the investigation is proceeding without state partners, and we are calling for a clear and transparent process that includes state investigating agencies," the post read.

The FBI will be solely responsible for the investigation into yesterday's incident, according to a statement by BCA Superintendent Drew Evans. He said the BCA was told that it “would no longer have access to the case materials, scene evidence or investigative interviews necessary to complete a thorough and independent investigation.”

Walz not confident in federal probe

Gov. Walz said he’s pessimistic that a “fair outcome” will come from a federal probe of Good’s slaying at the hands of an ICE agent.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) had expected to join the FBI to examine yesterday’s deadly encounter, before state officials said a day later that federal authorities had frozen them out.

“It feels very, very difficult that we will get a fair outcome,” Walz said. “And I say that only because people in positions of power have already passed judgment, from the president to the vice president, to Kristi Noem have stood and told you things that are verifiably false, verifiably inaccurate. They have determined the character of a 37-year-old mom that they didn’t even know.”

Noem had assumed the role of “judge, jury and basically executioner yesterday,” according to Walz.

A previous case where a man named Carlitos Richard Parias was shot by federal agents who alleged he was trying to ram them with a car was dismissed in October by a judge, citing constitutional rights violations. Federal official said that Parias, known online as Richard LA, was trying to escape an immigration arrest and had been boxed in by agents at the time of the incident.

Noem accuses state of 'not doing their work' after cutting out Minnesota investigators

Noem accused Minnesota state investigators of allowing volatility and "not doing their work" when asked by reporters on the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension being cut out of the investigation into yesterday's fatal shooting.

"I'd like to know where they've been and why they're not out on the streets investigating all of these people that are harassing and inciting violence on law enforcement officers right now," Noem said.

Noem also hit at the state over fraud allegations, which have gone viral recently after a right-wing influencer's video alleging fraud at child care facilities in Minnesota. The state released an audit in 2024 that found that failures by the state’s Education Department led to the misuse of a Covid-era program.

ICE officer was treated and released from hospital, Noem says

The ICE agent who shot and killed Renee Nicole Good yesterday went to the hospital following the incident, according to Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem.

"He was hit by the vehicle and went to hospital and received treatment, was released, and is spending time with his family now," Noem told reporters in New York City this morning.

Noem refused to get into specifics regarding the federal agent but described him as an "experienced officer" who acted within his training. She defended him again as being in fear that he would be run over. She accused protesters of assaulting ICE agents who were in Minneapolis yesterday prior to the incident, though witnesses who were there have disagreed with Noem's characterization.

"He had acted appropriately to protect his life and the life of his colleagues and fellow law enforcement officers," Noem said.

FBI freezes out state investigators

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) will not be part of the probe into an ICE agent's slaying of a female motorist, officials said today.

Instead, the FBI will be solely responsible for the investigation into the killing of Renee Nicole Good, a 37-year-old mother and U.S. citizen.

The BCA was told that it "would no longer have access to the case materials, scene evidence or investigative interviews necessary to complete a thorough and independent investigation," according to a statement by BCA Superintendent Drew Evans.

"The BCA Force Investigations Unit was designed to ensure consistency, accountability and public confidence, none of which can be achieved without full cooperation and jurisdictional clarity," according to Evans.

"The BCA remains fully committed to our partnerships to build public trust in use of deadly force investigations. If the U.S. Attorney’s Office and the FBI were to reconsider this approach and express a willingness to resume a joint investigation, the BCA is prepared to reengage in support of our shared goal of public safety in Minnesota."

Agent fires chemical material into protester's face

A federal officer appeared to fire a chemical agent into a protester's face in Minneapolis on Wednesday, following the slaying of 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good.

The man did not appear to be injured as he walked away under his own power, footage shot by Dymanh Chhoun of the St. Paul-based news outlet Sahan Journal showed.

Protests, such as this one near Portland Avenue and 34th Street, broke out all over the Twin Cities after an ICE agent gunned down the motorist.

'No justification': Schumer, Jeffries slam Trump administration and ICE over shooting

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., rebuked the Trump administration and ICE this morning over the shooting of Renee Nicole Good in Minneapolis yesterday.

At a press conference on Capitol Hill, the pair of Democratic leaders were asked if Democrats will slash funding for ICE if they retake the House or Senate next year, or hold ICE accountable.

"The killing of Renee Nicole Good was an abomination, a disgrace, and blood is clearly on the hands of those individuals within the administration who have been pushing an extreme policy that has nothing to do with immigration enforcement connected to removing violent felons from this country," Jeffries told reporters.

Jeffries said Democrats support the removal of violent felons who are in the U.S. illegally, but he said, "That’s not what this administration has been doing under the so-called leadership of Kristi Noem, who’s a stone-cold liar. There’s no evidence at all that this was a justified shooting."

Schumer said he watched the video of the incident. “You felt like your stomach was being punched," he said. "Looking at the video, there seemed no justification for what these agents did. There needs to be a full investigation at the federal level, although I have little faith in the FBI of doing a fair investigation or DHS, but at the local level as well.”

In a response to an attorney's post about the incident, Vance wrote: "A tragedy? Absolutely. But a tragedy that falls on this woman and all of the radicals who teach people that immigration is the one type of law that rioters are allowed to interfere with."

In a separate post, Vance wrote that congressional Democrats and Democrats running for president should be asked, "Do you think this officer was wrong in defending his life against a deranged leftist who tried to run him over?"

Eyewitness disputes Trump administration's account of shooting

Emily Heller, an eyewitness to yesterday's shooting, disputed the Trump administration's account of the incident.

"I'd prefer to not do this, but I knew after witnessing it that this would be misconstrued into self-defense, which it absolutely is not," she said in an interview with MS Now last night. "This was totally preventable and absolutely unnecessary."

She added that "no lifesaving measures" were attempted in the immediate aftermath of the shooting.

"You can clearly see her slumped over in the car," she said. "And this neighbor was yelling, 'I'm a physician, can I take vitals? Can I get a heartbeat? Can I please come administer CPR,' and they were saying, 'No, get back, we don't care.'"

Old Dominion University president calls Good’s killing tragic, says nation is in a dark place

The president of Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia, said that Renee Good graduated in December 2020 and that the college community was mourning her death.

The Minnesota Star Tribune identified the woman who was killed as Renee Nicole Good, citing Donna Ganger, who said she is the slain woman’s mother.

Good graduated from Old Dominion from the College of Arts and Letters with a degree in English, university President Brian Hemphill said in a statement last night, extending condolences to her loved ones.

“This is yet another clear example that fear and violence have sadly become commonplace in our nation. Indeed, this tragedy reflects the deep strain being felt in countless communities across our nation,” he said.

Hemphill said people have a duty to call on leaders to "restore civility in all facets of our lives, especially at the hands of those who are entrusted to protect and serve,” Hemphill said.

“May Renee’s life be a reminder of what unites us: freedom, love, and peace," he said. "My hope is for compassion, healing, and reflection at a time that is becoming one of the darkest and most uncertain periods in our nation’s history."

Shooting comes after DHS surged officers to city

The Department of Homeland Security has been surging officers to the Twin Cities in a crackdown after a right-wing YouTuber alleged fraud by Somalis living there, two DHS officials told NBC News at the time.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement began ramping up arrests of undocumented immigrants in the Minneapolis area in early December.

DHS planned to send 1,500 deportation officers from Enforcement and Removal Operations, as well as 600 agents from Homeland Security Investigations, the two DHS officials said.

Some of the officers and agents began arriving Sunday, one of the officials said.

The surge follows a viral video that alleged Somali-run day care centers were receiving federal subsidies while conducting little or no business. The Minnesota Department of Children, Youth, and Families investigated the allegations and said compliance checks at the facilities found children present at all but one, which closed in 2022.

Trump says shooting victim 'behaved horribly'

Trump has said the victim of the fatal shooting in Minneapolis yesterday "behaved horribly" and "ran over" an ICE officer before she was shot.

The woman, named as Renee Nicole Good, 37, was shot during an ICE operation and local officials have strongly disputed the federal government's claim that she was attempting to harm the officers.

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz said people should not believe what he described as a "propaganda machine" and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey called ICE's characterization "bulls---."

"She behaved horribly," Trump told the New York Times in an interview published this morning. "And then she ran him over. She didn’t try to run him over."

Trump said: "I want to see nobody get shot. I want to see nobody screaming and trying to run over policemen either."

The president told the newspaper that it was a "terrible scene" and "horrible to watch" as he played a video of the incident to reporters.

Minneapolis mayor tells ICE to ‘get the f--- out'

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey responded to yesterday's fatal shooting by telling Immigration and Customs Enforcement to leave the city, and he did so blunt terms.

“To ICE, get the f--- out of Minneapolis,” Frey said. “We do not want you here. Your stated reason for being in this city is to create some sort of safety, and you are doing the opposite.”

Video of the shooting was captured on video recorded by a bystander.

Gov. Tim Walz told his people in his state “don’t believe this propaganda machine,” referring to DHS and the Trump administration.

“What we’re seeing is the consequences of governance designed to generate fear, headlines and conflict,” Walz said at a news conference yesterday. “It’s governing by reality TV, and today that recklessness cost someone their life.”

Sen. Tina Smith, D-Minn. said she wants immigrationn agents to leave Minneapolis. The Trump administration targeted Minneapolis for an immigration crackdown.

“I wish they would just leave us the f--- alone. I mean, seriously,” Smith said.

“When did things stop being about politics and and start being about actual human decency?” she said.

On Tuesday morning, a day before the fatal shooting, DHS said on X in all capital letters: “GOOD MORNING MINNEAPOLIS!”

Minnesota police group warns against ‘reckless rhetoric from political leaders’

A Minnesota police advocacy organization yesterday decried what it called “reckless rhetoric from political leaders” following the fatal shooting by an ICE agent of woman in Minneapolis.

“The Minnesota Police and Peace Officers Association stands firmly behind law enforcement officers, accountability under the law, and the safety of every Minnesota community,” the organization, which bills itself as the largest association representing licensed police officers in the state, said in a statement.

“Irresponsible, reckless rhetoric from political leaders attacking law enforcement has real and dangerous consequences for officers on the street,” it said. “When officers are vilified, demonized, or used as political props, it fuels hostility, emboldens bad actors, and puts lives directly at risk.”

An ICE agent fatally shot 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good in her vehicle. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem has said the woman was engaged in an “act of domestic terrorism” and that the agent acted in self-defense.

Local officials have disputed that claim of justification.

Anger over the shooting led to demonstrations, and people in a crowd threw snowballs at law enforcement officers in Minneapolis, video showed.

Noem, Trump claim self-defense in shooting

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and President Donald Trump said that the fatal shooting by ICE in Minneapolis yesterday was justified.

Noem said the woman who was killed was engaged in “an act of domestic terrorism” and that the ICE agent acted in self-defense when he fired.

Noem said in a news conference yesterday that ICE officers approached the driver of a vehicle that was “blocking the officers in,” and that the woman “had been stalking and impeding their work all throughout the day.” Officers ordered her our of the vehicle, Noem said.

“She then proceeded to weaponize her vehicle, and she attempted to run a law enforcement officer over,” Noem said. “This appears as an attempt to kill or to cause bodily harm to agents, an act of domestic terrorism.”

The shooting, which was captured on video by a bystander, has been widely shared online and in the news media. Local officials, including the mayor of Minneapolis and Minnesota’s governor, have pointed to that video in objecting to the fatal shooting.

Trump on Truth Social also defended the ICE agent who fatally shot the woman.

“The woman driving the car was very disorderly, obstructing and resisting, who then violently, willfully, and viciously ran over the ICE Officer, who seems to have shot her in self defense,” Trump wrote.

Woman fatally shot by ICE officer identified as Renee Nicole Good

The person who was shot and killed by an ICE officer in Minneapolis has been identified by a woman who said she was her mother as Renee Nicole Good, 37.

Donna Ganger told the Minnesota Star Tribune that Good was “one of the kindest people I’ve ever known.”

“She was extremely compassionate,” Ganger told the Tribune. “She’s taken care of people all her life. She was loving, forgiving and affectionate. She was an amazing human being.”

Local officials have also identified the woman who was killed as Good.

The Minneapolis City Council described Good as a resident who was out “caring for her neighbors” when she was killed.

Sen. Sen. Tina Smith, D-Minn., said she was “heartbroken and angry” about the death of Good, whom she called “a U.S. citizen, a mother, and a Twin Cities resident.”
