Nolo was a Category 2 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 100 mph early Saturday, the National Hurricane Center said, as its outer rainbands hit the Big Island.
Polo’s strongest winds were expected to remain offshore as the storm’s center skirts the coast. Forecasters warned Nolo could cause catastrophic flooding for Hawaii’s Big Island.
Polo is forecast to strengthen rapidly over the next few days, the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said, and could become a major hurricane by midweek.
Homeowners were scrambling to place sandbags and board up windows as high surf threatened to flood residences along the shorelines in Los Angeles and Orange counties.
