Parts of the Big Island could see up to 20 inches of rain as residents brace for the effects of the storm while still recovering from an earlier hurricane.
Nolo was a Category 2 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 100 mph early Saturday, the National Hurricane Center said, as its outer rainbands hit the Big Island.
Polo’s strongest winds were expected to remain offshore as the storm’s center skirts the coast. Forecasters warned Nolo could cause catastrophic flooding for Hawaii’s Big Island.
The storm lashed Hawaii’s western islands with heavy rain, widespread flooding and strong winds, leaving most Kauai residents without power. Now extensive recovery efforts begin.
The National Weather Service issued hurricane warnings for the islands of Kauai and Niʻihau in the face of the Category 3 storm. A tropical storm warning is in effect for Oahu.
