An American doctor in serious condition after he contracted Ebola while working with a charity organization in Liberia was on a specially outfitted plane on the way to the U.S. for treatment Saturday morning, the organization Samaritan's Purse told NBC News. Dr. Kent Brantly — the first person infected with Ebola to be transported to the U.S. — will land at Dobbins Air Force Base in Marietta, Georgia, before he is transported to Emory University Hospital in Atlanta. It was unclear what time the plane would land.
Emory has prepared a special isolation unit with the help of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and said they are equipped to care for Brantly. The State Department is also working to evacuate missionary Nancy Writebol, a second American stricken with the deadly disease, out of Liberia within the coming days. Writebol remains in serious but stable condition, according to SIM, the Christian mission organization that she works with. Ebola has infected more than 1,300 people and killed 729 of them in the current West African outbreak, according to the CDC.
