What to know about the latest round of U.S.-Iran attacks

The United States and Iran traded a new round of attacks overnight into this morning, intensifying an exchange that has threatened the collapse of their agreement to end the war.

The American military said it hit around 90 targets in airstrikes across Iran, hours after President Donald Trump said he considered the tenuous ceasefire between the two countries over following Iranian attacks on shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.

Tehran retaliated with attacks on three Gulf states — a wave of strikes that sparked alerts in U.S. allies Qatar, Bahrain and Kuwait — as the two sides accused each other of violating the terms of their interim deal.

Syrian officials say Trump has begun process of removing Syria from list of state sponsors of terrorism

The Syrian minister of foreign affairs posted a photo on X showing him and Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa on a plane, displaying what appears to be a directive from Trump ordering Syria’s removal from the list of state sponsors of terrorism.

“Dear Mr. President, Today, I have notified Congress of my decision to rescind the State Sponsor of Terrorism designation for Syria,” the Trump-signed document reads, noting that Congress now has 45 days to review it.

The White House did not immediately respond to an NBC News inquiry as to whether the document is authentic.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio said earlier on X that Trump had informed Congress of his intention to rescind Syria’s designation. Trump also raised the possibility during a meeting with Sharaa today on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Turkey.

Syria had been blacklisted since 1979, when the State Department designated it as a country that has “repeatedly provided support for acts of international terrorism.” Other countries on the list include Iran, North Korea and Cuba.

6,000 seafarers remain trapped around Strait of Hormuz, U.N. maritime agency says

About 6,000 seafarers remain trapped around the Strait of Hormuz, the head of the U.N. maritime agency said, as he condemned the latest U.S. and Iranian attacks that have further delayed their evacuation.

“These reckless attacks have again placed innocent seafarers in grave danger. No seafarer should have to risk their life simply for doing their job,” said Arsenio Dominguez, secretary-general of the International Maritime Organization.

Global trade is powered by about 2 million seafarers, many of them from Asian countries, including India and the Philippines, who spend much of their time away from home. At the height of the Iran war in March, 20,000 seafarers were trapped on about 2,000 vessels, the agency said at the time.

“This is not simply a matter of shipping statistics. Behind the figures are seafarers, and in some cases their families, who continue to bear the human cost of this conflict,” Dominguez said yesterday. “Too many seafarers have tragically lost their lives in connection with this conflict.”

Trump says Iran wants to 'make a deal badly'

Trump has insisted that Iran is desperate to make a deal with the U.S. to end the war, despite the recent escalation in hostilities between the two sides, with the president saying overnight that Tehran had called him over peace efforts.

Speaking aboard Air Force One last night, Trump insisted that Iran "wanna make a deal so badly," even after Washington accused Tehran of launching attacks on commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz, triggering a back-and-forth series of attacks from both sides. "They called a little while ago," he said.

"I just don’t know that they’re worthy of making a deal. I don’t know that they’re going to honor the deal," Trump continued. "That’s the problem."

Asked why Tehran would attack commercial vessels amid the ongoing ceasefire with the U.S., Trump responded, "because they're sort of crazy, to be honest with you ... They're a little bit out of control, but they wanna make a deal badly."

Oil prices climb around 5% after Trump said Iran ceasefire was 'over' and threatened new strikes

U.S. strikes on Iran have been completed, CENTCOM says

The latest round of U.S. strikes against Iran has been completed, with about 90 Iranian military targets hit, U.S. Central Command said.

They include “air defense systems, coastal surveillance assets, missile and drone storage sites, naval capabilities and military logistics infrastructure along Iran’s coastline,” the command said in a statement.

It was the second consecutive day of U.S. strikes against Iran. On both days Iran retaliated with strikes on U.S. military sites in Bahrain and Kuwait.

The attacks this week further imperil a fragile U.S.-Iran ceasefire as the two countries try to finalize a lasting agreement for ending the war that began Feb. 28. Trump said at the NATO summit in Turkey today that he considered the ceasefire to be “over” and that further negotiations would be a “waste of time.”

“I don’t want to deal with them anymore,” he said.

"This is really not a war so much. It’s a de-nuking of Iran, de-nuclearization of Iran," he said. "So this is all about taking nuclear weapons, not allowing Iran to have nuclear weapons, and everybody should like that."

Trump said "NATO came a long way today" after he left the summit in Turkey.

"It was a very, very good meeting, and people understand that the United States is — we’ve been treated very unfairly," Trump said. "And then, on top of that, they weren’t there for a really de-nuking."

Trump has repeatedly condemned European leaders for not joining in the war in Iran. However, he left the summit today claiming that "there was great unity in that room today."

Iran will not respond to 'vulgarity with vulgarity,' foreign minister says

"Addressing the Civilized and Courageous Nation of Iran with derogatory language does not diminish its Greatness," Araghchi said in a post on X. "Iranians are known for their civility, culture, and strong moral values. We do not answer vulgarity with vulgarity, but with action: fearlessly and with great valor."

Earlier today at the NATO summit, Trump said, “They’re scum. You know what scum is? They’re scum. They’re sick people. They’re led by sick people, and they’re vicious, violent people.”

Vance says if Iran shoots at ships, the U.S. is 'going to knock the hell out of them'

"The basic deal that we cut was we'll lift our blockade if you stop shooting at ships, but if you shoot at ships, we are going to punch back and we're going to punch back harder than ever before," Vance said as he took questions from the media at the event focused on fraud.

Vance said that Iran had been "well behaved for about a week, but then they start shooting at ships."

"So the deal is very simple: If they shoot at ships, we're going to knock the hell out of them, and it's that simple — and that's the basic way it's going to work," he added.

Trump says he hasn't made up his mind yet about selling F-35s to Turkey

Trump said during the news conference that he hasn't made a final decision about resuming U.S. sales of F-35 fighter jets to Turkey.

"We have a very strong relationship with Turkey," Trump said. "Now, it's a very big country, it's a very powerful militarily ... it's the second most powerful country in NATO."

"So, whether or not we do that — I haven't totally made up my mind — but my inclination is to say, look, he's done everything, he's helped us in so many different ways," he said in response to a question about whether he reached an understanding with Erdogan on Turkey returning to the F-35 program.

Trump had signaled yesterday that he was open to selling the jets to Turkey again.

Trump faces questions about why he's not flying new Air Force One home

Trump was asked twice during the news conference about why he isn't flying back to the U.S. in the new Air Force One. He first dodged the question with a lengthy response about threats to his life from Iran and his popularity on TikTok.

Then, another reporter asked directly, "Why aren’t you flying on the new Air Force?"

"It’s flying to Europe, to one of the big bases, two or three of the big bases, where we can show it to the people," Trump said, adding that he would be "going home by normal methods."

"It’s going to go to a couple of bases [and] stop so the soldiers can see it, because it’s truly magnificent," he added.

Trump says he's not sure he wants to make a deal with Iran: 'Let's just finish the job'

Trump said at his news conference that he's not sure he wants to find a peaceful resolution to the conflict with Iran anymore now that the ceasefire has ended.

"We can play games, but I'm not sure I want to make a deal. Let's just finish the job," Trump said when asked what changed with the U.S. posture toward Iran.

"I'll tell you what happens next," Trump continued. "We're never going to see Iran have a nuclear weapon, because that's much more important than the numbers you're talking about. The prices of oil are dropping like a rock now, they'll be up a little bit, and this will end very quickly. "

Trump, however, said that the Iran war is not restarting.

"I don't think it's going to start again. I think it's going to go very quickly," he said. "They hit a couple of ships, and so we hit them much harder."

"Somebody asked before, 'Do you think you hit them tonight?' I said, 'We might. Yeah, we might,'" the president added.

Belgian prime minister calls new Ukraine loans a 'red card' to Putin

At the NATO summit, Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever took a slight jab at Trump.

De Wever compared the alliance's 70 billion-euro ($80 billion) loan plan for Ukraine to the recent FIFA World Cup red card controversy.

U.S. soccer star Folarin Balogun was reinstated to play against Belgium on Monday after his red card suspension was lifted following a call Trump made to FIFA President Gianni Infantino seeking a review.

Belgium ultimately beat the U.S. 4-1.

De Wever quipped that the loan package to Ukraine signifies a very strong "red card" to Putin.

"You can't just take back a red card," he said. "You know that."

Trump to fly on old Air Force One again for a leg of the trip

Trump plans to fly to the Mildenhall Air Force Base in England on the former Air Force One plane before making his way to Joint Base Andrews on the newer Qatar-donated luxury jet, according to a senior White House official.

The new Air Force One has now departed Ankara without the president on board.

The old Air Force One was already on the ground in Ankara because it served as the support plane on the president's NATO trip.

Air base visits are typically known in advance, rather than last minute, like this visit.

The White House has denied that the change in plans is due to any issue with the new Air Force One.

Trump announced the move in a Truth Social post.

"To honor our brave men and women of the Military, we are sending the brand new, and truly spectacular, Air Force One to Mildenhall Air Force Base, in the United Kingdom, to give them a chance to tour the Aircraft — Everybody is so excited, and we thought that they should be the first," he wrote.

"For old time’s sake, we’ll be taking the former Air Force One, from Turkey to Mildenhall, a short trip that is totally worth doing in order to give our Great Military Heroes a chance to appreciate our beautiful new addition to the Air Force Fleet!" the president added.

Trump says the U.S. may reimpose a blockade on Iranian ports in the Strait of Hormuz

The U.S. may reimpose a blockade on ships going to Iranian ports in the Strait of Hormuz, Trump said.

"We may put down the blockade," he said. "We may put it back, the blockade, and it'll only be a blockade for Iran; anybody else can have whatever they want. Now, of course, they'll drop some mines if they can, you know, if they can do it."

"But it's hard, because we're taking out those little boats now with the same weapon we used to take out the drug lords and the boats coming in by sea," he said, referring to U.S. strikes on alleged drug boats in the Caribbean and Pacific.

Trump also repeatedly said that the U.S. may strike Iranian targets again tonight.

Zelenskyy told reporters when asked what he thought might be changing in Russia's calculus on the war that Putin was stronger at the start of the conflict, adding, "I think he is losing initiative on the battlefield."

Zelenskyy said he believed Ukraine had made better "technological steps" than Russia, arguing that Ukraine had become "quicker."

"We are quicker, and that's why I think that now initiative moved to our hands, not totally, but moved," he said, adding that Ukraine is trying to move the war from the battlefield to the sky.

Trump said he will speak to Putin today after gesturing to Zelenskyy and asking reporters if they had a question for "President Putin."

"You have a question for President Putin please?" Trump said to a Ukrainian reporter, waving his hand toward Zelenskyy.

"Do you have a question for President Putin, not Zelenskyy," Trump said, again pointing to Zelenskyy and seeming to emphasize he really meant the Russian leader.

"What would you like to ask him because I'm going to ask him that question," he said.

"We have a lot of pressure on President Putin," Trump also said in remarks alongside Zelenskyy. "You know, I don't think he likes what's going on," Trump said. "I don't think he's thrilled with what's happening. There's a lot of pressure on President Putin to get it done."

Trump says he will allow Ukraine to make Patriot missiles

Trump told reporters that he and Zelenskyy would discuss allowing Patriot missiles to be made in Europe.

"We're going to talk about that," Trump said about the U.S.-made air defense system. "Look, it's a defensive weapon, which I like, better than an offensive weapon. It's the best."

"One of the things we're going to be talking about is we're going to give a license to you to make Patriots, that's pretty cool, right?" Trump said, speaking to Zelenskyy. "This way, he can't complain that we're not giving them enough," Trump added, addressing the room.

Trump added that his administration had not yet informed the manufacturers of the missiles, Raytheon and Lockheed Martin.

Trump says Iran will be hit 'hard' tonight

Trump said in remarks to reporters at the NATO summit that the U.S. will hit Iran "hard again tonight" after the two countries traded strikes last night.

"I'll give them a little warning," Trump added. "We're going to hit them hard tonight, but we'll see how it all works out."

In comments alongside Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Trump described Iran as "behaving very badly" and said he was "not happy with them," saying they don't follow through on agreements made during negotiations, including on denuclearization.

Trump said he would "think we've made a lot of progress, and they'll get out of the room, we'll talk about it here, they'll agree on everything, and then they'll go have a news conference, and say we never even talked about it."

Trump, expressing frustration, called the Iranian negotiators "cuckoo."

Rubio says Ukraine's deep-strike capability has changed the dynamics in talks to end war with Russia

Secretary of State Marco Rubio suggested that Ukraine's ability to strike deep inside Russia recently using drones has changed the dynamics in negotiations to end the war.

"I think that's one of the dynamics that's changed in this war over the last few months, and that is that the Russians are finding it more difficult to defend their own airspace," Rubio said when prompted by Trump to answer a reporter's question about the drone capabilities.

"What we hope that means is that's going to create the space now for — to negotiate the end of this war," Rubio said.

Trump interjected, "It's an escalation, but it's also an escalation that can help lead to an end."

Rubio made the comments after a reporter asked Trump for his assessment of Ukraine's strikes on Russian oil refineries.

“To me, I think it’s over,” Trump said on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey. “I don’t want to deal with them anymore.”

“As far as I’m concerned, it’s over,” the president continued. He said that negotiations could continue but that he considers them a “waste of time.”

U.S. crude oil sharply jumped more than 6.5% to $75 per barrel, its largest one-day move up since the beginning of June. International oil benchmark Brent rose 6.2% to almost $79 per barrel.

Trump says he's unhappy with NATO over Iran and Greenland

Trump expressed his dissatisfaction with NATO once again at the alliance's summit over its members' opposition to a U.S. takeover of Greenland and lack of cooperation on Iran.

In a meeting with Mark Rutte, the NATO secretary-general, the U.S. president said he was "not happy" with the alliance because of "what they did with" Greenland and their alleged unwillingness to help the U.S. with the Iran war.

Trump is presumably referring to the deployment of NATO troops to the Nordic island in January following tense discussions with European members over Greenland's future.

The president acknowledged that he did not speak with Rutte before joining Israel in the initial wave of attacks on Iran, adding that if he had, the way the Iran war has gone "might have been different." But he added, "We didn't need help."

Trump orders halt to U.S. trade with NATO ally Spain

Trump today ordered an immediate halt to all trade with Spain, dismissing the U.S. NATO ally as “hopeless” amid tensions over defense spending and the Iran war.

“I don’t want to do any trade with them, alright?” Trump said at the NATO summit in Turkey’s capital, Ankara. He appeared to make the comments to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who replied, “Yes, sir,” according to Reuters.

“Take it immediately. Don’t even talk to them. They’re hopeless. They’re bad people,” Trump said.

However, the office of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez downplayed Trump’s comments, saying in a statement that it was treating his order as “business as usual” and did not intend to change the “excellent” relations it has with Washington, Reuters reported.

Allies condemn Iran's strikes on Kuwait and Bahrain

Egypt, Qatar, Jordan and Kuwait said today that they “strongly condemn” Iran’s “repeated attacks” on Kuwait and Bahrain.

The recent strikes were a "flagrant violation of the sovereignty" of both Gulf states, their foreign ministries said in statements on X, while expressing solidarity with their neighbors.

Oman’s Foreign Ministry also condemned the latest attacks against Bahrain and Kuwait in an X post, warning that the escalation of military tensions in the region poses a threat to not only its security, but overall maritime safety.

The country's Foreign Ministry said it rejects “any action that would undermine the security of states or expose civilian and commercial ships to danger.”

Attacks have complicated 'already fraught' peace talks, E.U. foreign affairs chief says

The recent exchanges of fire between the U.S. and Iran have further complicated “already fraught talks” to end the war, according to the European Union's foreign affairs chief.

Calling Iran's attacks on Bahrain and Kuwait "unacceptable," Kaja Kallas said in a post on X that Iran had violated the memorandum of understanding it signed with the U.S. by attacking ships near the Strait of Hormuz.

“Freedom of navigation must be unimpeded,” she said.

Analysis: Why violence has flared again over the Strait of Hormuz

Ultimately this is a dispute over who controls the Strait of Hormuz, the vital shipping lane for 20% of the world’s oil and natural gas.

Iran insists it has sovereignty over the strait and wants commercial vessels to only use routes it has approved, attacking vessels if they don’t comply. An Iranian official told reporters in Tehran that ships should also pay “maritime service fees” to the Islamic Republic.

Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Iran’s chief negotiator, said this morning that his country “will not fold on the issue” and “the era of bullying and extortion are over.”

The U.S. says passage though Hormuz must be unobstructed and free.

Negotiations have been paused while millions of Iranians this week mourn former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed by the U.S. and Israel at the start of the war.

During the weeklong funeral, there have been calls for revenge, and now the peace deal with the U.S. is in question.

U.S. conduct at World Cup similar to its foreign policy, Iran's president says

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian today compared U.S. conduct at the World Cup to its approach to foreign policy.

“The U.S. government’s conduct as World Cup host follows its familiar foreign policy: bending rules, bullying rivals, creating obstacles, and cheating,” Pezeshkian said in a post on X today.

“This is their MAGA playbook,” he said, adding: “Iran rejects such games. We stand firmly for our rights.”

Before it was knocked out, Iran's team had complained about unfair treatment in the World Cup.

It was forced to move its training base from Arizona to Tijuana, Mexico, due to difficulties getting visas processed.

U.S. authorities also required the team to enter the U.S. within 24 hours of a match and leave the same day, leading coach Amir Ghalenoei to say Iran was the “most oppressed” team in the tournament. These guidelines were loosened after the team's first two matches.

NATO chief Rutte calls U.S. strikes on Iran ‘absolutely necessary’

Before the second day of the NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey, the alliance’s chief said Iran’s violations of the ceasefire made it “crucial” for the U.S. to forcefully react.

In a separate meeting with Trump, Mark Rutte told the president, "I think what you did last night was absolutely necessary. It was a very strong response."

Trump says Iran ceasefire is 'over'

Asked whether the ceasefire and memorandum of understanding with Iran is now over after the latest attacks, Trump said it was.

"It’s a very interesting question to me. I think it’s over. I don’t want to deal with them anymore," Trump said.

"They’re scum. You know what scum is? They’re scum. They’re sick people. They’re led by people, and they’re vicious, violent people."

He added: "And if they had a nuclear weapon, they’d use it. As far as I’m concerned, it’s over."

Trump did also say that he would allow U.S. negotiators to keep talking with their counterparts, but when asked if talks with Tehran will resume, he said, “I don’t care. They can talk, but I think they’re wasting their time. They’re a bunch of lying guys.”

Iran has not commented on whether it considers the ceasefire or interim agreement between the two sides over.

'We hit them very hard,' Trump says

The president made additional comments ahead of his bilateral meeting with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte.

"We have attacked very powerfully last night the very dangerous people from Iran," Trump told reporters in Ankara. "They’re sick. There’s something wrong with them. We say go and do your funeral stuff, and instead of that, they start shooting rockets at ships yesterday, and so we hit them very hard last night, very hard. I would say 20 to 120 times tougher."

Trump was referring to the funeral events being held for slain Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, which had put talks between the two sides on hold.

Iran targets American military sites in the Gulf after wave of U.S. attacks

Iran launched attacks against American bases in the Gulf, retaliating for a new wave of strikes by the U.S. military after it said Tehran hit three commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz.

The intense exchange raised fears for the fragile ceasefire as the two countries try to agree to a lasting end to the war that began with U.S.-Israeli strikes in February.

It came as President Donald Trump was in neighboring Turkey for a summit of NATO, the U.S.-led military alliance. Iran, meanwhile, was holding a mass, dayslong funeral for slain Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
