Two more missed chances for Ronaldo
Off another great run from Nuno Mendes, who then made a great pass into the box, Cristiano Ronaldo nearly had his hat trick, but his left-footed shot missed left.
Ronaldo then had another opportunity seconds later, intercepting a kick from the goalkeeper. But his left-footed shot was saved by Abduvohid Nematov.
We’re at the second half hydration break
Portugal added to its lead this half via an own goal off a corner kick. Uzbekistan will have roughly 20 minutes (plus stoppage time) after this break to at least try to improve its goal differential.

Goal! Portugal now up 4-0
After a Bruno Fernandes corner, João Félix back-flicked a shot toward the goal. The ball bounced off multiple people, including an Uzbekistan defender and goalkeeper Abduvohid Nematov, before landing in the net as an own goal.
Ronaldo nearly injured on brilliant set piece
Ronaldo once again played decoy on a free kick, and ran into the center of the box and received a perfectly placed chip pass. Uzbekistan goalkeeper Abduvohid Nematov broke up the play, however, leading to a corner.
Ronaldo was holding his leg on the grass after the play, but got up in time for the corner kick.
We’re about 10 minutes into the second half
Outside of Ronaldo nearly taking the ball away from Uzbekistan goalkeeper Abduvohid Nematov, not much going on so far in this second half in terms of chances.
The second half is underway
Can Uzbekistan finally get on the board? Or will Portugal continue to pour on the goals?
Halftime: Portugal 3, Uzbekistan 0
Complete domination from Portugal in the first half.
Cristiano Ronaldo looks to be in top form after struggling in his World Cup opener, scoring two goals already today.
Portugal is leading in practically every major statistical category. Uzbekistan nearly scored at one point, but had a goal taken away due to replay.

Ronaldo nearly had a hat trick
Cristiano Ronaldo nearly scored his third goal during stoppage time, trying to chip a shot over a diving goalkeeper. He was inches away from a third goal but his shot was kicked off the goal line by a defender.
Ronaldo again! Portugal leads 3-0
Cristiano Ronaldo is cooking in Houston.
As Bruno Fernandes ran down the middle of the field, Ronaldo went wide to his right. Fernandes hit Ronaldo with a perfect pass, and Ronaldo perfectly placed a shot with his right foot to the opposite side of the net.
That’s Ronaldo’s 145th career goal for Portugal.
10 minutes to go until stoppage time
Uzbekistan has somewhat settled into this match since the hydration break, at the very least beginning to close the possession gap. But Uzbekistan still has a long way to go to climb back into this one, especially after a potential score was taken away thanks to replay.
Uzbekistan goal is called back!
After Abbosbek Fayzullaev won the ball back for Uzbekistan near the top of the box, Azizjon Ganiev unleashed an incredible strike that briefly made this a 2-1 game.
But replay review determined Fayzullaev’s tackle was a foul, and the goal was taken off the board.
Time for the hydration break
Uzbekistan will have a free kick after the break, but Portugal has thoroughly dominated so far.
Portugal has an 80% to 20% possession edge, and has made nearly 100 more accurate passes than Uzbekistan.
At this point, Uzbekistan needs to figure out how to control the ball for even a few seconds before thinking about scoring.
Goal! Portugal takes a 2-0 lead.
It’s been all Portugal so far in this match.
After a foul at the top of the box, Portugal was awarded a free kick. Both Cristiano Ronaldo and Nuno Mendes lined up in position to take the shot, and it was Mendes who buried a goal into the left corner of the net with his left foot.
Ronaldo’s goal made history
Cristiano Ronaldo’s right-footed strike in the sixth minute made him the first player to score a goal in six different World Cup tournaments, a neat record for a player who’s come under fire for his play of late.
Ronaldo, 41, also became the second-oldest player ever to score in the men’s World Cup.
Goal! Ronaldo is on the board!
Portugal’s relentless attacking has paid off.
Cristiano Ronaldo just scored his first goal of the 2026 World Cup, burying a right-footed one-timer into the back of the net off a pass from Nuno Mendes. That was a fantastic finish into a tight window.
Ronaldo can’t connect on cross
Ronaldo just whiffed on a cross into the right side of the box from Nuno Mendes. That was a great opportunity missed by the legendary goal scorer.
Very early chance for Portugal
Bruno Fernandes just had an attempt in the box, but his left-footed flick was deflected high of the net.

Senegal skipper Koulibaly owns up to mistakes against Norway
Senegal captain Kalidou Koulibaly owned up to key mistakes in his side’s World Cup group-stage loss to Norway yesterday that left the African side in danger of early elimination.
Koulibaly’s slips allowed Norway to win 3-2 and book their place in the next round along with France, while Senegal, who before the tournament had been touted as strong outsiders, have yet to pick up any points and must win their match against Iraq in Toronto on Friday if they are to have any chance of being one of the best third-placed finishers.

“At the top level, football comes down to the details. The team that makes the fewest mistakes wins. Today, I made a lot of mistakes and that’s a real shame,” Koulibaly told reporters after the game.
“The standard at the World Cup is very high and so there is no room for error. We made too many mistakes to stand any chance of winning the match.”
Koulibaly misjudged a clearance and goalkeeper Edouard Mendy was unable to keep out substitute Marcus Pedersen’s rasping shot to give Norway the lead close to halftime.
Norwegian fans take dawn World Cup party to palace gates to wake the king
Wild overnight celebrations erupted across Norway as the men’s national team secured qualification to the World Cup knockout stages and a tide of elated supporters headed to the palace of 89-year-old King Harald V to see if he would join their party.
Despite the match ending at around 4 a.m. local time, Norwegian supporters took to the streets to party after seeing their team qualify for the last 32 after a thriller 3-2 win against Senegal in the second round match of Group I.
Football fever engulfed Oslo, with the capital full of people celebrating the win, even though it is a normal workday.
A large crowd marched up Oslo’s main thoroughfare towards the royal residence chanting: “We’re going to wake up the king.” Upon reaching the palace square, hundreds of fans sat on the ground to perform the “Viking rowing” celebration.
The Norwegian Royal House declined to comment on whether the king and Queen Sonja had been awoken by the festivities, or if the monarch had stayed up to watch the match.

DHS changing guidelines for Iran team’s next match
The Department of Homeland Security is changing the guidelines for Iran’s national soccer team ahead of its third World Cup match on Friday to accommodate extra time afforded to other countries in the tournament, an agency spokesperson said.
The shift comes as the Iranian soccer federation said it planned to lodge an official complaint with FIFA, the governing body, over its treatment in the U.S. so far.
The team will now be allowed to travel to Seattle two days before the game, allowing for an extra day beyond the 24-hour window given to Team Melli for its first two games. But the team will still be asked to depart for its home base in Tijuana, Mexico, after the match wraps.
"Again, the President wants to make sure that we’re talking about what actually happens on the pitch. A lot of that is making sure that things are safe and secure, not just around the stadiums, but around base camps and training sites," the DHS spokesperson said.
The Iranian team was originally slated to train at a facility in Tucson, Arizona, before its base camp was abruptly moved to Tijuana, Mexico, in late May. That means the team has shuttled to and from games in a shorter amount of time than other countries and they’ve had to depart the U.S. after each of their first two matches.
The team had previously complained about unfair treatment in the tournament so far, where the other 47 teams have been able to travel to matches sooner and stay afterward for recovery time if they prefer. The Iranian team coach said his players were “the most oppressed team in the whole World Cup.”
Iran tied both of its first two matches in Los Angeles and could advance with a victory over Egypt on Friday in Seattle.
With Messi better than ever, Argentina can reach final
Joe Prince-Wright and Nick Mendola deliver their key takeaways from the Group J match between Argentina and Austria, in which Lionel Messi scored a brace and broke the record for most World Cup goals scored (17).
Ronaldo back in action and Portugal hoping to get him going
Cristiano Ronaldo will be back in action today when Portugal takes on Uzbekistan.
He is goalless in his last 10 games for the national side at major tournaments. So will Ronaldo start?
The same question was asked of Portugal's coach in Qatar four years ago, only this time around, the man in charge is Roberto Martínez, not Fernando Santos. While not specifically referring to Ronaldo, Martínez said earlier this week that some of the criticism his side received after its 1-1 draw against the Democratic Republic of the Congo is “unfair, it’s unjust.”
