Four-time U.S. Olympic skier and gold medalist Bode Miller pleaded not guilty to a pair of misdemeanor drug charges in Idaho, which the athlete said was a misunderstanding over cannabis.

Miller was charged June 6 with possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia, according to Fremont County Magistrate Court records.

Miller said Tuesday on Instagram that he was pulled over “for accelerating while passing another vehicle on a highway.”

“My friend, who was traveling with me, had a small amount of cannabis and a cannabis pipe in his possession which I was unaware of,” Miller wrote in the post.

“We fully cooperated with the officer,” he wrote. “I am hopeful the misdemeanor charges will be dropped once the facts are reviewed.”

Miller posted a $5,000 bond to get out of jail.

A lawyer for Miller could not immediately be reached for comment Tuesday.

Miller, 48, first donned red, white and blue in Salt Lake City in 2002, capturing two silvers, in the giant slalom and the Alpine combined.

After he failed to make the podium in Turin in 2006, he came back with a vengeance, winning three medals at Vancouver in 2010. He took home gold in the super combined, silver in the super-G and bronze in the downhill.

He put the finishing touches on his storied Olympic career with a super-G bronze in Sochi in 2014.
