Jessie Diggins' best chance for medal today
In the women’s 10km freestyle, Jessie Diggins, who is competing in her fourth and final Olympics, has a chance to win her first individual gold. Diggins has won three Olympic medals in her career (one of each color), with her only gold coming in the team sprint at the 2018 PyeongChang Games.
Diggins has had a tough start to her Olympic campaign in Italy. She injured her ribs after crashing early in the skiathlon on Saturday (finished 8th) and raced through the pain in the individual sprint, where she was eliminated in the quarterfinals.
Today’s race is considered her best chance to win a medal at these Games.
After the sprint on Tuesday, Diggins posted on Instagram, saying, “There’s no lasting injury here and it’s only temporary, and skiing won’t make it worse, so… onwards we go!”
4 Americans qualify for finals in men's moguls
Americans Charlie Mickel and Landon Wendler advanced to the men’s moguls final after finishing in the top 10 in the second round of qualification today in Livigno, Italy.
Mickel placed 3rd, 13th in the overall qualification standings, after laying down a clean run for 77.82 points. Wendler followed in 7th, 17th overall, with a tighter run for 76.34 points.
“I knew I had a good score from the previous quali day,” Wendler told NBC. “I tried to up the degree of difficulty in my jumps. I haven’t done a cork 10 in a competition in probably two years, so it was good to get one under my belt before we head to finals and go for it.”
Nick Page and Dylan Walczyk had already qualified.
The finals begin later this morning at 6:10 a.m. ET.
Norway and Italy tied for lead in the medal count
Norway and Italy both have 13 medals — seven gold for Norway and four for Italy — leading in the medal count heading into Day 6.
Team USA has 12, with four gold, six silver and two bronze.
Ukrainian star banned from wearing helmet tribute to war dead
A Ukrainian athlete has been disqualified from the Winter Olympics over his insistence on wearing a helmet honoring people killed in his country’s war with Russia.
The International Olympic Committee said in a statement this morning that skeleton racer Vladylsav Heraskevych, the Ukrainian flag bearer, was “not allowed to participate at Milano Cortina 2026 after refusing to adhere to the IOC athlete expression guidelines.”

The decision was announced shortly before Heraskevych was due to compete in the men’s skeleton competition, in which he was considered a legitimate medal contender.
“This is price of our dignity,” he said in a post on X shortly after meeting with the committee’s president, Kirsty Coventry. Heraskevych indicated he would appeal the decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
