We don't take choosing the best of the best lightly—especially regarding travel products, which can be pricey. Our team took this testing process so seriously, in fact, that we traveled to Japan and Paris, road-tripped up and down the East Coast and even took these products on a cruise.

How we tested
First and foremost, our team compiled all previous coverage from NBC Select’s travel-related categories. From there, we chose products featured in our articles and did a competitive market research analysis on new and additional products, including those that are expert-recommended and highly rated. We focused particularly on products our team owns personally or has had extended time using.
When we review a product, we do so comprehensively. Products underwent an eight-week trial period before being selected as our favorites in their respective categories. We utilized our editors as shopping and trying experts. Each editor was given the same testing criteria during the testing period to ensure each item was held to the same standards and procedures. We want to provide products that perform well and share ones that allow our readers to improve their travel experience.
Our scoring system and feedback process
As part of the testing process, our editors scored items on a scale of 1 to 3. The products were evaluated, among other things, on the below criteria:
Space
- How much clothes or outfits can you pack inside of the suitcase?
- Does the bag or suitcase feel spacious or have enough pockets?
Durability
- Does the bag or suitcase sustain scratches or dents easily?
- Is the luggage weather resistant or able to repel any water?
Handles and straps
- Are the handles able to support a fully packed bag?
- How does the suitcase handle feel on different surfaces?
- Do the straps of the luggage feel comfortable when fully packed?
Zippers
- Does the zipper glide along smoothly or does it feel flimsy?
- Do the zippers get stuck when fully packed?
