"Overcompensating" star Mary Beth Barone will lead red carpet coverage for the Golden Globes as the official correspondent, becoming the latest social media creator to take on awards show coverage.

The comedian, who is the co-host of the popular podcast "RIDE" alongside "Overcompensating" creator Benito Skinner, will interview celebrities before Sunday's show. Coverage will be posted in real time to the Golden Globes social media accounts, including Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Facebook, X and Threads, beginning at 6 p.m. ET.

Creators have become an integral part of film, television and music marketing. Brands and studios regularly enlist them to interview celebrities and artists for social media content. They can be paid thousands of dollars by studios to help promote projects, according to Business Insider.

But in recent years, some viral exchanges between a handful of influencers and A-list stars have generated scrutiny over why creators are getting tapped for major entertainment events.

Jeremy Lowe, vice president of talent and partnerships at Dick Clark Productions, which helps put on the Globes, previously told NBC News that creators have become "part of the evolution of red carpet coverage, and they bring their personal brands to their interviews."

Dick Clark Productions, which is also behind events like New Year’s Rockin’ Eve and the American Music Awards, has a “dedicated team working in tandem” with creators it taps for carpet coverage.

The Golden Globes were the first award show to tap into the appeal of influencers on the carpet.

When Amelia Dimoldenberg, creator of the YouTube interview series “Chicken Shop Date,” hosted the 2023 Golden Globes red carpet, her interviews became instant hits on social media. Her flirty exchange with actor Andrew Garfield also made headlines. In 2024, Julian Shapiro-Barnum of “Recess Therapy” helmed the red carpet coverage.

“To be a great host on the red carpet at the Golden Globes, you have to be quick witted, immersed in pop culture and ready to embrace the chaos of the moment,” Lowe said in a statement, adding that Barone is “the perfect choice for the role and we can’t wait to see her interviews on Sunday.”

Barone has made a name for herself as a stand-up comic, with Netflix planning to tape her next special, "Galaxy Brain," in March. She has amassed roughly 372,000 followers on Instagram, where she often posts clips from her shows.

“It is truly an honor to be the red carpet correspondent for the 83rd Annual Golden Globes,” Barone said in a statement. “This was such an incredible year for film and television. I look forward to potentially embarrassing myself in front of my favorite actors while dressed in evening wear. Some people watching at home may be amused by me, and others will think I am the dumbest person alive. Let’s do this thing!”

The 83rd annual show, which is being held at The Beverly Hilton, will air on CBS and stream on Paramount+ on Sunday at 8 p.m. ET. Comedian Nikki Glaser will return as host for a second year.
