A winter storm headed for the northeast is expected to be "quite the precipitation-maker," as it oscillates between snow and rain starting Friday. The wintry mix, set to affect more than 6 million people, is due to begin Friday night in areas stretching from West Virginia to New York City, according to Weather.com. This swath, including Washington, D.C., and Philadelphia, can expect snowfall until Saturday afternoon, at which point the snow will head north through Boston and up to northern New England. Parts of New England should expect up to 6 inches of snow, according to Weather.com, which warned that the storm could deliver higher-than-anticipated accumulations in all areas depending on rising or falling temperatures. "This is definitely one of those storms where a few localized areas may end up with far more snow than forecast, while others get less," Weather.com said.
The storm has "abundant moisture from the Gulf of Mexico" making it "quite the precipitation-maker," according to the National Weather Service, which placed areas from Eastern Tennessee to Northern Maine under winter storm watches, winter weather advisories and freezing rain advisories on Friday afternoon. Gusty winds are also predicted to hit the coastal regions of the northeastern states throughout the day Saturday, according to Weather.com. Meanwhile, the warmer Southeast and southern Mid-Atlantic states can expect heavy rains and thunderstorms on Friday night and Saturday, according to the National Weather Service.
The system began in the Texas Panhandle, where it dumped 14 inches of snow in Sedillo, New Mexico and 13 inches outside of Amarillo, Texas — more than doubling the record for that date. Once the storm concludes on Sunday, another will wallop the Mid-Atlantic and southern New England again. Some of the same areas that have the potential to get buried by the weekend storm could see another 3 inches of snow right on its tails, making for a messy Monday commute, according to Weather.com.
