More than a foot of snow was on the ground Thursday on the Texas Panhandle, with more coming down — part of a storm system that will soak the Southeast before curling north and dumping rain and snow on the big cities of the Northeast.
Winter storm alerts were still posted Thursday across most of New Mexico, Texas and Oklahoma. Sedillo, New Mexico, recorded 14 inches of snow through 10 a.m. Thursday, and a total of 13 inches was recorded outside Amarillo, Texas, more than doubling the record for the date.
Meanwhile, heavy rain pounded Houston and the towns between Dallas and Austin, Texas. The storm was expected to bring rain to Louisiana and Mississippi on Thursday afternoon, and almost the entire South on Friday, forecasters for The Weather Channel said.
As the system jogs north, Philadelphia and New York could see 3 to 5 inches of snow on Friday and Saturday, and parts of New England could see as much as 8 inches.
