CBS football analyst and former NFL quarterback Tony Romo is “on leave,” the network said Friday, a week after he was arrested in Milwaukee on suspicion of impaired driving.
It wasn’t immediately clear if the decision to go on leave was made by Romo or CBS Sports.
“Tony Romo is on leave from his role at CBS Sports until further notice,” CBS Sports said in a statement.
A representative for Romo could not be immediately reached for comment Friday.
The former Dallas Cowboys signal caller was pulled over July 23 on southbound Interstate 43 at 6:18 p.m. CT and then he “performed poorly” on standardized field sobriety tests, according to Milwaukee County sheriff’s records.
Bodycam video showed Romo was slow to respond to a deputy’s instructions, insisting he needed to first call his lawyer and often asking for the law enforcement agent to repeat herself.
After Romo stepped out of his car, the deputy grabbed his backpack.
“There were a few ‘shooters’ in there that I observed,” the deputy said, using the slang term for small containers of alcohol.
Romo was asked if he’d consent to a breath test and he declined: “Oh, no, we’re not doing that.”
The former QB appeared to chuckle when asked if had suffered any head injuries.
“Well over the years, yes, but not recently,” Romo said.
The Wisconsin native was booked on one count of allegedly operating while intoxicated and released.
Romo is one-third of CBS’ top football broadcasting team, which includes play-by-play man Jim Nantz and sideline reporter Tracy Wolfson.
The broadcaster was ordered to appear in court Sept. 21, which would be the Monday night of the NFL’s Week 2. The top CBS matchup of Week 2 figures to be the Pittsburgh Steelers visiting the AFC-champion New England Patriots on Sept. 20.
