‘That’s 100% him’: Newly released video shows moment police arrest Luigi Mangione

Newly released body camera footage shows the moment Pennsylvania police confront Luigi Mangione in a McDonald’s and later find a gun, a magazine and a silencer in his backpack.

In the footage, officers approach Mangione and ask him to pull down his face mask.

“Yeah, sure,” Mangione says.

An officer appears to immediately recognize him as the suspect in the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.

“That’s 100% him,” an officer says, standing outside the Altoona McDonald’s.

“I told you, man,” another says.

CNN first reported on the videos and said they were shown during a suppression hearing last year but were not made public until now. NBC News has obtained copies.

Thompson, 50, was shot in the back on Dec. 4, 2024, as he headed to a UnitedHealthcare investor conference in Manhattan. Security video shows Mangione approaching him from behind and opening fire. Thompson was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Mangione was arrested at the McDonald’s five days later, after he was recognized from photos released by police.

In the footage, officers say Mangione had checked into a hostel with fake identification and ask him about the name he used.

“Is that your name, Mark Rosario?” an officer asks.

“Uh, no, sir,” Mangione says, seated with his arms crossed. He then gives his real name.

Officers search his backpack at the McDonald’s and find a gun magazine.

“It’s f---ing him, dude,” an officer says. “It’s f---ing him. 100%.”

Mangione was taken to a police station, where officers found more items, including a gun, a silencer, a gun magazine hidden in a pair of underwear and a journal with handwritten notes.

“He has a handgun, suppressor, his cellphone’s in a Faraday bag. He has a checklist for today. Tomorrow he’s supposed to do an intel check-in and get a survival kit,” another officer says, speaking on the phone.

In August, Mangione pleaded guilty to federal stalking charges. In a statement to the court, he said that in 2024 he posed as a potential investor managing more than $50 billion in assets and emailed UnitedHealthcare executives to confirm the location of the investors conference so he could track Thompson.

Mangione, who comes from a prominent Baltimore family, said he traveled to New York “with the intent to shoot Brian Thompson.” He said he was driven to kill Thompson because of his experience with the healthcare system as a patient with a back injury.

Prosecutors have said Mangione was never a customer and had no personal connection to the insurance giant.

His state trial, which includes a second-degree murder charge, was set to begin in September, but a judge postponed it to give prosecutors time to respond to a double jeopardy motion from his attorneys. Mangione’s defense argues the state charges should be dismissed because he pleaded guilty to the federal charges.
