Instagram released Boomerang on Thursday, a standalone app that lets users record 1-second videos and share them on social media.

Don't call them GIFs, the company wrote on its blog. The app takes a burst of photos and stitches them together to make videos.

They certainly look a lot like GIFS, but they actually move (or boomerang) forward and then backward in time, as opposed to restarting from the beginning.

"Capture a friend jumping off a diving board, defying physics as she flies back and forth through the air," the company wrote. "Transform an ordinary selfie with your friends into a funny video. Get that exact moment your friend blows out his birthday candles, then watch them come back to life again and again."

This is the third app Instagram has released since the summer, when it unveiled its slow-motion video app Hyperlapse, followed by Layout, which lets users combine multiple images into one. Boomerang is available for free on iOS and Android devices.
