Dozens of protesters appeared in court Monday after they were arrested in weekend demonstrations over the acquittal of a white Cleveland police officer charged in the shooting deaths of two unarmed black motorists.
Fifty-eight people were arraigned on misdemeanor disorderly-conduct charges. The judge reduced the charges from failure to disperse. They were all sentenced to time served, and fines of $150 were waived, NBC affiliate WKYC reported.
Protesters charged with felonies will appear in court at a later date. In all, 71 people were arrested, the mayor said.
Protests broke out on Saturday after Officer Michael Brelo was found not guilty of voluntary manslaughter in the killings of Timothy Russell and Malissa Williams after a high-speed car chase in November 2012.
