KABUL, Afghanistan — Hundreds of Afghans protested in Kabul on Monday to demand justice for a woman who was killed by a mob outside one of the capital's most famous mosques.
The woman, a 27-year-old religious scholar named Farkhunda, was beaten, pushed from a roof, run over by a car and set alight before her body was thrown in the Kabul River last Thursday. She was buried on Sunday.
The case has sparked a huge public outcry, and protesters who gathered Monday by the Shah Doshamshera mosque demanded the government prosecute all those responsible for Farkhunda's death.
"Those arrested should be put on trial in public and justice should be done, so it can be a lesson," said one protester named Palwasha. Police said they have arrested 13 people in relation to the incident, and suspended 13 policemen amid allegations they stood by and did nothing to stop the attack.
