A woman was taken into custody after two young children were apparently stabbed at a home in Palm Bay, Florida on Friday night, police said.

Laci McCarty, 7, and Philip McCarty, 6, were found “unresponsive with serious injuries” after police were called to a report that multiple children may have been injured or killed inside the house. They were taken to an Orlando hospital but pronounced dead.

A third child, five-month-old Christoper Swist, was in a critical condition, police said.

Officers attending the scene found a visibly-injured woman outside the home armed with a knife. She was taken into custody and was also being treated at the hospital.

"A crime like this is beyond words," said Palm Bay police commander John Resh. "It is unthinkable that someone could do this to innocent children."

The investigation is ongoing, the police statement said.
