About a dozen people gathered Thursday night in Mesa, Arizona, to remember a 29-year-old man who was killed in a shooting spree Wednesday.
Family and friends of David Williams gathered around candles and flowers at a memorial at the Tri-City Motel, where the alleged gunman, Ryan Giroux, began his deadly spree.
“He made me laugh and he wanted to do the right thing in life,” Williams’ girlfriend, Veronica Ehrig, told NBC affiliate KPNX.
Ehrig witnessed the shooting, but she wasn’t injured. Williams’ mother and another woman, however, were shot at the motel.
After opening fire at the motel, Giroux then allegedly shot three other people in three different locations, according to Mesa Police.
The 41-year-old suspect, whom officials said is a neo-Nazi skinhead with an extensive prison record, is being held on $2 million bail.
"I don't understand how a person can do this to somebody," Ehrig’s sister, Tanya, told KPNX at the memorial.
Mesa Police Department Detective Esteban Flores told NBC News on Friday that police have not determined a motive for the shooting that led to Williams’ death.
“The only ones who would know are either not talking (Giroux) or no longer alive,” Flores wrote in an email.
The five surviving victims were all in stable condition and recovering Friday, Flores said.
