An eight-year-old boy died Tuesday after his head became stuck in his Las Vegas neighborhood's automatic gate, police said.

The victim was caught as he was trying to crawl through an open space where the gate’s automatic arm moves through while it opens and closes, according to North Las Vegas Police. A child on a bike activated the gate’s sensor causing it to open. The boy could not move away in time and was crushed, officials said.

Police were called about 5:30 p.m. (8:30 p.m. ET) and the boy was transported to a hospital with severe injuries, Sgt. Chrissie Coon said in an email. He was later pronounced dead.

Coon said the incident appeared to simply be a tragic accident.
