Interpol issued a wanted notice for ousted Ukrainian president Viktor Yanukovych on Monday, alleging corruption charges including misappropriation and embezzlement. Yanukovych fled Ukraine to Russia in February following months of violent protests in Kiev in which more than 100 people were killed.
The charges listed by Interpol appear to relate to the current Ukrainian government's allegations that Yanukovych siphoned government funds, which were symbolized by his opulent private Mezhyhirya Residence, complete with golf course, mock galleon, and parking lot full of classic cars. Ukraine's administration alleges that the former leader was responsible for security forces opening fire in an attempt to disperse demonstrators in Independence Square. However, there is no reference to these allegations in Interpol’s Red Notice.
The notice comes after Ukraine’s general prosecutor announced in December that Interpol had refused to place Yanukovych on its wanted list. According to the Kyiv Post, Interpol feared the charges were politically motivated. After giving several press conferences in Russia, in which he was defiant against his ejection, Yanukovych kept a low profile in Russia last year. On December 30, film director Oliver Stone posted pictures of himself with the former Ukrainian leader on Facebook after what he said was an interview in Moscow.
