A member of the grand jury that declined to indict Officer Darren Wilson in the shooting death of unarmed teenager Michael Brown last year in Ferguson, Missouri, sued in federal court on Monday for the right to talk about the case publicly.
The grand juror was represented by the American Civil Liberties Union. According to the suit, he or she questions “the implication that all grand jurors believed that there was no support for any charges.”
Grand jury proceedings are secret, and jurors can be prosecuted for discussing their cases unless a court allows them to. The grand juror, named in court papers only as “Doe,” filed suit against Robert McCulloch, the St. Louis County prosecutor. He would be the person to bring charges if the grand juror spoke without court permission, the ACLU said.
McCulloch’s office told MSNBC on Tuesday that it had not been served and had no comment.
