Dr. Rick Sacra, the third American aid worker to be infected with Ebola, is "sick but stable", doctors treating him at the University of Nebraska said Friday. Sacra, 51, arrived at the Nebraska Medical Center's special biocontainment unit Friday morning after being evacuated from Liberia, where he was infected. "The transfer really went very, very smoothly and the patient is up in our biocontainment unit," said Dr. Mark Rupp, chief of infectious diseases at the hospital.
"Our patient is sick but stable and we are taking appropriate care of this patient," Rupp told a news conference. "We know that he is seriously ill with a virus that has a very high mortality rate associated with it. We are looking for alternatives to some of our experimental therapeutics right now." In the meantime, doctors will use "aggressive supporting care" to make sure that fluid loss and electrolyte loss don't damage his organs, Rupp said.
