The park in front of the White House was temporarily evacuated on Thursday after an unidentified package was thrown over the White House fence, according to the Secret Service.
A robot inspected the bag, which landed on the driveway of the North Lawn, before a Secret Service agent wearing a bomb suit opened it up to inspect its contents. Lafayette Square, located outside the White House gates, was reopened to the public after authorities found the bag did not pose a security risk.
NBC Washington reports a man is in custody.
It is not uncommon for the White House to go on lockdown because of unattended bags left near the president's home. It is more rare, however, that the bags are thrown over the White House gates.
