The Ferguson police officer who fatally shot an unarmed teenager, sparking days of protests and violent clashes with police, was taken to an area hospital after the deadly encounter, a senior law enforcement official told NBC News.

Ferguson police said Michael Brown, 18, was shot after a “physical confrontation” with Officer Darren Wilson that involved a struggle for the officer’s weapon. Brown’s family rejects that account, and some witnesses claim Brown had his hands up when he was shot Aug. 9.

It is unclear how serious the injuries were, or whether Wilson was admitted to the hospital. The St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney's Office told NBC News they haven't received or reviewed any records relating to Wilson's injuries.
