Medical workers are coming under fire as the conflict in Gaza rages on, a leading charity said Monday. More than 500 Palestinians have died and thousands have been wounded in Israel’s two-week offensive targeting Hamas. Some of the heaviest casualties came from an assault on the Shejaia area over the weekend, which inundated Gaza’s main Shifa hospital.

Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) called on Israel on Monday to stop bombing the Gaza Strip, saying the shelling is making it difficult to provide much-needed care. The organization -- which is also known as Doctors Without Borders -- reported that staff saw two dead paramedics and two others who were injured trying to retrieve wounded from Shejaia, while a “clearly identified” MSF vehicle also narrowly escaped an airstrike. “Medical workers and facilities must be respected, and shooting should not occur at or near ambulances and hospitals,” said Nicolas Palarus, the group's field coordinator in Gaza. “What we see on the ground is that bombing is indiscriminate and that those who die are civilians.”
