GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip -- At least 12 women and children were among 27 people killed by an Israeli airstrike targeting a senior member of Hamas' military wing, health officials and neighbors told NBC News on Monday. The attack flattened a home in Gaza's southern city of Khan Younis around 8:30 p.m. local time on Sunday. Most of the victims were members of the same extended family. Ahmed Abu Sahmoud, who was the strike's intended target, was among those killed. The Associated Press later reported that two people were pulled alive from the rubble.
Meanwhile, Israeli tanks opened fire on another home in southern Gaza, killing 10 people including four children and a 9-month-old baby girl, a health ministry official told The Associated Press. The deadly strikes came as United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and Secretary of State John Kerry headed to neighboring Egypt, in an attempt to stop the violence. More than 500 Palestinians and 20 Israeli soldiers have been killed in two weeks of unrest.
