Police clashed with rioting tribesmen demanding more wealth and power on Saturday in the Red Sea coastal city of Port Sudan, leaving at least 14 people dead and 16 injured, a government official said.
The riots by members of the Beja tribal group broke out early Saturday in Port Sudan, 425 miles northeast of the capital, Khartoum, the provincial governor General Hatim Al Wasilah told The Associated Press.
The casualties occurred when police tried to stop riots that caused “widespread looting and sabotage on private properties,” said Wasilah, who added that the situation had been brought under control.
It was not immediately clear what triggered the riots, but Wasilah said the tribe on Friday had submitted a demand to the government for the fair distribution of wealth and power.
