The Department of Veterans Affairs estimates that 250,000 veterans living in the U.S. are homeless, and as many as double that number experience homelessness at some point during the course of a year. Of the entire adult homeless population, one-third have served in the military. Most homeless veterans are male, with 45 percent suffering from mental illness and 70 percent abusing alcohol or other drugs.
