In another sign of Asia’s growing wealth and influence, a Chinese-language edition of Better Homes and Gardens is being planned for China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore.
The new edition will contain Better Homes content that will be localized in China, said John Zieser, vice president of corporate development at Meredith Corp., the magazine’s publisher.
Financial terms were not disclosed Wednesday.
Obvious cultural differences will be portrayed in the Chinese version, Zieser said. But overall, consumers in China are becoming more affluent and place great emphasis on home, cooking and gardening, he said.
Meredith signed a multiyear licensing agreement with SEEC Media Group of Hong Kong to publish the Chinese edition. Financial terms of the deal were not made public.
The Chinese edition represents Meredith’s first non-English publishing version. Meredith will receive a percentage of the revenue generated from the magazine, which is scheduled to debut in late summer.
Competition in the highly populated country for the home and family genre of magazines is scarce, Zieser said. Good Housekeeping also has a Chinese version.
Better Homes and Gardens has about 38 million monthly readers in the United States. Meredith also publishes Ladies’ Home Journal, MORE and American Baby.
