Online search company Ask Jeeves Inc. Wednesday launched an application that lets people search files and documents on their computers, joining a number of competitors who have released similar applications recently.

Ask Jeeves said the Windows-only program was a test application and that its formal launch would come next year. Users can search a range of spreadsheets, text documents, presentations, photos, videos and music files.

Microsoft Corp. launched its own desktop search tool on Monday, and Yahoo Inc. said last week it would start testing such a tool in January. Google Inc. released its version of desktop search in October.
