Legislation to Reduce Prison Population is Working

According to South Dakota’s general counsel, the legislation passed last year in an effort to reduce prison population and save money is working. The legislation passed in 2013 brought reforms that allowed nonviolent drug offenders to seek treatment via drug courts rather than prison. The Public Safety Improvement Act has tripled the amount of nonviolent offenders in the state's DUI and drug courts.
