As family members of missing people looked on Thursday afternoon, officials said they were not expecting to find survivors. The search was called off for the night after dark.
"It's scary because, you know ... it's a possibility [the victims are] people we know," Ovilla Police Chief Mike Moon said.
According to Moon, as flooding receded, crews began making discoveries.
"There are vehicles being found that have been washed down creek," Moon said.
So far, three vehicles have been found and now investigators are busy trying to match recovered vehicles with missing persons.
Meantime, most of the storm-related damage was along the Dallas/Ellis county line, according to NBC 5.
More than 10 inches of rain fell in Desoto, more than 12 in Cedar Hill and more than13 inches in southeast Dallas, according to NBC 5 Chief Meteorologist David Finfrock.
In Lancaster, the mayor declared a state of disaster after flooding destroyed more than 100 homes there.
Residents said the fury of the moving water was terrifying.
"The water in the house was about 4 and a half feet deep ... broke the doors and windows," homeowner Nellie Person said.
Also, dozens of manufactured homes under construction at a manufacturing plant were destroyed.
Flooding pushed some of the homes, which were in various stages of construction, into a nearby creek bed.
