“If there are missiles that land, then we are going to own it. Not NATO, it’s the United States, and that, to me, will have grave consequences," Democrat Gregory Meeks of New York said Saturday.

“If there are missiles that land, then we are going to own it. Not NATO, it’s the United States, and that, to me, will have grave consequences," Democrat Gregory Meeks of New York said Saturday.

Democratic Congressman Gregory Meeks of New York said Saturday that there is no need to rush military action in Syria. The administration should allow time for “the facts come out and let the facts be what they are” in order to drum up international support, Meeks said on Weekends with Alex Witt.

“If there are missiles that land, then we are going to own it. Not NATO, it’s the United States, and that, to me, will have grave consequences,” he said.

If the US acts unilaterally and does not look at the issue in its totality, Meeks said, “the image will be it’s the United States that has injected itself. Not the international community that injected itself. And that’s a different connotation that could lead down the road to different headaches.”

Meeks speculates a potential predicament that if the US was to strike and there was retaliation by the Assad regime, then America would be forced to react alone. The use of chemical weapons does not only break an American standard, but it also breaks an international standard. He said, “I think that we have a responsibility to do this collectively.”
