A rare South Texas earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 4.8 shook homes in the San Antonio area on Thursday.

There were no immediate reports of major damage or injuries.

The quake struck at 7:24 a.m. and was centered about 37 miles northwest of Beeville and 76 miles south-southeast of San Antonio, the U.S. Geological Survey said. It was the largest earthquake on record for the area, surpassing a magnitude-4.3 shock recorded in 1993, the agency said, according to The Associated Press.

Some residents reported feeling tremors in San Antonio.

Sharon Carlin emailed the KSAT 12 newsroom to report the quake.

"My entire building shook. I was on the bed watching the news and the entire bed was shaking. It lasted about 25 seconds," Carlin wrote to the TV station. "Both my animals were freaked out, each one thought the other was in the room and making the bed shake."

In January 2010, a magnitude-2.6 quake was recorded in the area, the last one on record, according to the AP.
