The archdiocese of Louisville said it now knows the scope of sexual abuse throughout the diocese.
On Thursday in the archdiocese newspaper, The Record, the diocese said between 1950 and 2003, some 40 priests were accused of abusing nearly 300 victims, causing the diocese $26.5 million in settlements.
The numbers are part of a report by the John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York.
The U.S. Conference of Bishops commissioned the school to determine the scope of the sexual abuse crisis throughout the country's 194 dioceses. The archdiocese of Louisville said it was not shocked by the numbers.
"Since 2002, most of the information about the archdiocese has been in a public forum, so there's not much surprises in our stories," Dr. Brian Reynolds, of the archdiocese.
Advocates of the abused said now that the numbers are known, they hope the church will take an active role in helping victims of the abuse heal.
