Plenty of people have credited Facebook with finding love and old friends, but for Nick, the social networking site saved his life.
The two-year-old pit bull was about to be euthanized at the Miami-Dade Animal Shelter when a man from Michigan saw the dog’s mug on Facebook and knew he had to have him.
So Steve Jordan hopped on a plane and rescued Nick his grim fate.
"Put it this way. I haven’t cried in the past two years more than I have in the past 24 hours trying to get here to save him,” an emotional Jordan said.
Nick and Jordan’s first meeting was Friday, but Jordan fell in love with his newfound companion in March when he was on Facebook looking at the Urgent Dogs page.
The Miami-based group is headed by Maggie Rodriguez. She describes her group as an animal lovers networking agent and she uses the Facebook page to post pictures of local dogs that are running out of time to be rescued.
Miami-Dade’s shelter euthanized more than 20,000 animals last year.
Rodriguez knew Nick’s leash on life was short so when Jordan said he wanted the dog, the two had to move fast.
"It was awesome, I ran to the shelter,” Rodriguez said. “I had to get his animal, his companion."
Jordan said he fell in love with Nick because he looked exactly like his bull terrier that died in 2005.
Now the two new best friends are hitting the road on a two-day road trip back to Michigan.
"He's gonna see snow for the first time this winter," Jordan said.
