A small plane made an emergency landing Monday on Interstate 80, according to authorities in northern New Jersey.
The federally owned plane was being used for local homeland security training, authorities said.
No one was injured when the single-engine plane landed at about 2:30 p.m. local time near the highway's exit 66 in Hackensack, said Sgt. Stephen Jones of the New Jersey State Police.
He said the plane, with a flight instructor and law enforcement officer on board, landed in the eastbound express lane of the highway, a busy section about eight miles west of New York City.
The landing happened so quickly that police had no time to block off traffic, but vehicles managed to get out of the plane's way, Jones said.
"It was an emergency," he said. "There wasn't enough time to get the roads stopped."
No injuries were reported.
The pilot had reported mechanical trouble and was in contact with a control tower at New Jersey's Teterboro Airport, where it was headed, he said. It was not immediately known where the flight originated, Jones said.
The aircraft is owned by the Justice Department and was being used for a training flight for homeland security efforts by the prosecutor's office.
