A little boy who has spent the past year in the hospital went from patient to firefighter.
Grayson Gunter, 9, became an honorary firefighter Monday. He had a heart transplant when he was 20 months old, and his immune system was suppressed after that.
In July of last year, doctors diagnosed Grayson with Burkett's Leukemia. For the past 14 months, he has been at Vanderbilt Children's Hospital for treatment.
Since March, he's also been going through rehab at Stallworth.
As an honorary firefighter, Grayson has a badge and a hat, just like the real firefighters. And sometime soon, the fire department will take Grayson on a ride in one of their trucks.
Since Grayson's been in Nashville for treatment, his family has only been back to their home in Maryville about once a month. They've only had two week-long visits home, but they're going home this weekend. Grayson's mom said he's very excited to see his older brother Jacob.
