HERMANAS, New Mexico (AP) - For the first time, U.S. Border Patrol agents have a permanent presence along a stretch of border marked in some places by a rancher's barbed-wire fence.
Agents are patrolling from Camp Ramsey, a forward operating base built along winding stretch of highway in southern New Mexico dozens of miles from any population.
The outpost boasts holding cells and dorms for agents to live for five days at a time. It opened this summer, and agents believe it has already curbed illegal immigration and drug smuggling in the area.
