Kansas City Chiefs

announced on Monday that Chan Gailey has been let go as offensive coordinator.

Gailey joined the Chiefs in 2008. He came to Kansas City after spending six years as head coach at Georgia Tech.

“There’s never great timing for situations like this. However, Todd has to do what’s best for the team and for the future of the Chiefs. I respect that. It didn’t work out for us, but I certainly think that he has a very fine offensive mind and I feel very fortunate to have worked for the Chiefs these past two years," Gailey said in a news release.

The Chiefs left open the possibility that Gailey could be retained to work in another area for the team.

Head coach Todd Haley said he will be running the offense for the time being.

Haley would not comment on quarterback Matt Cassel's knee injury. Cassel hurt his knee in a preseason loss to Seattle on Saturday.

"I will only talk about the players on the field," Haley said.

Cassel was not on the practice field Monday.

KMBC's Nick Griffith said there are reports that Cassel could be out two to four weeks.
