A little more than a month ago, hundreds of cats and dogs were rescued from a Waianae animal shelter.
On Saturday, the newly formed Oahu Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, or SPCA, expanded its adoption reach.
New at PETCO's store in Kapolei on Saturday was a little dog and cat corner set up by the SPCA where several animals were on display.
"We are going to be bringing in puppies, dogs, kittens and cats and hopefully we can give people a chance to see the animals," said Alicia Maluafiti of the Oahu SPCA.
Toffee is one of 400 dogs, cats and birds who were rescued when the owner of a Waianae animal shelter died suddenly.
The SPCA still has about 50 dogs and 60 cats that need foster or permanent homes. Organizers hope that by partnering with PETCO they can reach more potential pet owners.
The SPCA will be at PETCO every Saturday. But it's also planning an open house and special adoption day at its Kalaloa facility.
"The kickoff is Sept. 19," Maluafiti said. "We are not a public facility that is open to the window-shopping for animals, but on that one day, we ask the public to come down, to check out the facility, to become members and consider adoption, consider fostering."
The organization said it has been involved with a number of other animal rescues since the large Waiaane shelter shutdown.
It's hard to tell now, but one kitty was thrown over the SPCA fence covered with foam insulation that had hardened.
Many of the animals come with stories of abuse or neglect. Organizers hope to find them homes and second chances.
"We can always use volunteers. The best way to choose one of the pets is to come down, volunteer and get to know their personalities," foster adoption coordinator Michelle Lawson said.
