Hughes Network Systems LLC, a subsidiary of Hughes Communications Inc., said Friday that its Brazilian division received satellite-based backhaul services contracts from two cellular operators.
Terms were not disclosed.
Hughes do Brasil will provide satellite backhaul services to connect 79 remote cellular base transceiver stations to their GSM networks over 60 months.
Hughes said the pact should eventually help provide cell phone access to about half a million consumers and businesses in the central and northeastern regions of Brazil.
Shares of Hughes Communications added 25 cents to $28.54 in afternoon trading.
