A flash flood watch is in effect from 2 p.m. through late Friday night for most of the Maryland, the District and northern Virginia. A flash flood warning has been issued until 4:45 p.m. for Howard, Montgomery, Carroll and Frederick counties.
Showers began in the early afternoon across the area, according to NBC4 meteorologist Tom Kierein. Heavy downpours are possible between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. After that, lingering showers and storms are still possible, meaning the Skins game, as well as any high school football action, will be on the wet side. Hey, at least it can be an excuse for the Skins' first-team offense if it doesn't score a touchdown for the third straight game.
The downpours could make the afternoon rush hour a mess, with high water on roads and small streams spilling over their banks.
If you're wondering, the rainfall has nothing to do with Tropical Storm Danny out in the Atlantic Ocean. That storm could cause minor problems along the beaches on Saturday, but Friday night's rainfall is part of a tropical front moving up from the Caribbean.
