Edward Igor McIrvin, the Greensboro man who was charged earlier this month with stealing 37 cats from the Reidsville Veterinary Hospital, will get a clean slate if he performs 50 hours of community service and obeys the law for the next six months. Julia Hejazi, Rockingham County’s chief assistant district attorney, said felony breaking and entering and larceny charges would be dropped against McIrvin if he agrees to the terms set forth by a deferred prosecution deal Thursday in district court. McIrvin, 43, turned himself in to police July 13, about a week after the former Rockingham County Animal Shelter volunteer removed the cats from the facility to help them avoid euthanasia. He later paid the veterinary hospital a discounted $100 adoption fee for each cat and a week’s worth of board. All 37 cats were adopted.
