Israel shelled southern Lebanon Saturday after two rockets were fired toward the Jewish state, officials said.

At least six shells landed in an area where the rockets had been launched from, a Lebanese security source told Reuters.

Israeli paramedics in Jerusalem said one rocket landed in northern Israel, causing minor injuries to three people who were evacuated to a hospital in the nearby coastal town of Nahariya.

Officials said that Israeli shells landed in the vicinity of the Mansouri and al-Qulaila areas.

The militant Hezbollah group has a large rocket arsenal but is not believed to have used them against Israel since their 2006 war. NBC News reported Saturday that Hezbollah issued a statement denying responsibility for the attack.

The attack came a day after the Israeli president chose hard-line Likud leader Benjamin Netanyahu to form a new Israeli government.

The last rockets launched from Lebanon into Israel were fired on Jan. 8 when a Palestinian group said it had attacked Israel in response to the offensive in Gaza.

Some 1,300 Palestinians and 14 Israelis were killed in the 22-day Gaza operation that ended in a ceasefire on Jan. 18.
