Chinese state media says six people have died in heavy snow storms in Tibet.

Chinese state media said Thursday that six people have died in a heavy snow storm in Tibet.

The official Xinhua News Agency said the storm that started Sunday has dumped close to 25 inches of snow in the south of the region.

The report said about 1,700 people remain trapped by damaged buildings or roads, and more than 170,000 head of livestock are stranded in counties in southern Tibet.

The six people either froze to death or were crushed by collapsing buildings, it said. Another 1,200 people were relocated to other villages, and are sleeping in schools or government buildings.

Armed police and transportation officials are working to clear snow on the plateau, Xinhua said, and have distributed tents and relief materials.
