Mike Philipps, editor of The Post newspapers the last seven years, will become president and chief executive officer of the Scripps Howard Foundation.

Philipps, 61, will succeed Judith G. Clabes, who will retire from the post after 11 years. The appointment, effective Feb. 1, was announced Tuesday.

The Scripps Howard Foundation is the philanthropic arm of E.W. Scripps Co. The Cincinnati-based media company closed The Cincinnati Post and its sister newspaper The Kentucky Post on Dec. 31, when a joint operating agreement with Gannett Co.'s Cincinnati Enquirer ended after decades of declining circulation.

Philipps joined Scripps in 1977 as a reporter for The Cincinnati Post, serving in a variety of roles over the next 30 years. He earlier worked for his hometown newspaper, The Lima News.

Although Clabes will no longer oversee the foundation's day-to-day operations, she will succeed Alan M. Horton as chairman of its board of trustees when his term ends in May, the foundation said.
