The driver of a sport utility vehicle that struck and killed two bicyclists riding in a charity event last month has been charged with reckless homicide, authorities said.
Sharon King, 35, of Greensboro, N.C., turned herself in Thursday and was released on $10,000 bond, Highway Patrol spokesman Lance Cpl. Ron Johnson said.
A telephone listing for King could not be found, and her attorney could not be reached for comment Thursday evening.
Lee Anne Barry and Thomas Hoskins were riding on a highway just south of the North Carolina state line when they were hit on Oct. 21.
Barry, 43, was on the last leg of a cross-country bicycle ride to raise awareness for brain injuries. Hoskins, 49, had joined her for the last portion of the ride.
"Nothing can replace the lives of Lee Anne Barry and Tom Hoskins," the Hoskins family said in statement released by Will Haltiwanger of the Palmetto Cycling Coalition. "It is our hope that those operating a motor vehicle will be focused on the road before them."
