President Bush attended a fundraiser Monday night hosted by the Republican Governors Association, which is celebrating the recent victory of Bobby Jindal, a GOP candidate just elected governor of Louisiana.
The event raised $650,000 for Republican gubernatorial candidates across the nation, according to a Republican official who declined to be named because the organization did not disclose details of the event.
Louisiana, Kentucky and Mississippi are the only three states electing governors this year.
In Kentucky, first-term Republican Gov. Ernie Fletcher is running against Democratic challenger Steve Beshear in his bid for re-election Nov. 6. In Mississippi, Gov. Haley Barbour, the former chairman of the Republican National Committee who helped engineer the GOP's 1994 takeover of Congress, is seeking a second term in a race against Democratic challenger John Arthur Eaves Jr.
With Secret Service agents in tow, Bush walked the couple of blocks to the event held at the Decatur House, a historic home at a corner of Lafayette Park across Pennsylvania Avenue from the White House. The home was built in 1818 for naval hero Stephen Decatur and his wife, Susan.
